locomotive servicing terminal

i am planning to devote significant space for a servicing terminal and am curious about those tall smoke stacks that one often sees attached to the HO scaled model roundhouse/machineshops. i find the stacks architecturally appealing and pleasing to my eye, BUT . . . What is it that is burned creating the need to disperse the exhaust? With what will i supply the facility for whatever that is? Am i bringing it in via hopper, gondola, tank car or something else? Any (well actually all) response from those with far more knowledge than i will be appreciated . . . thanks

A stack attached to a machine shop is probably evidence of a boiler for steam generation to power big machine tools. As far as fuel, the two most common would be either coal or fuel oil, probably depending on what is common in the area (or what your railroad's steam locos burn).
