Hm, sounds like someone needs to go to the local hobby shop.
Yes internet sites provide items at a cheaper price, but watch out for the S&H costs.
Often while buying track at the local hobby shop you get a discount.

At the one I go to I get 50cents off every piece, and free terminal railjoiners
(Plain ones too)

If you really want to go through an online company or dont have a hobby shop nearby its probably the only thing to do. But if thats not the case I think hobby shops deserve our support.

And having a list of the sites you had in mind would be helpful....

i've been to several hobby shops to compare prices with some of the internet sites and i've found some of the internet sites to have the better price even after figureing in the shipping and handleing. i model in n scale and one hobby shop wants $3.85 for a length of flex track. add the tax on and the web sites are way better. i have bought my track and my dcc system from a web site. the track was $1.89 per length and the dcc system was slightly lower than some other sites. try www.fshobby.com/ . i have also used toy train heaven has good pricing too. i like to support the lhs's but there comes a time when they are too expensive and you can buy more for your buck from the webs. also the closest lhs is 35 miles from my home so figuring in costs of gas and traffic applies too.

Yep, that sounds reasonable.

But, $3.87 for a piece of flextrack? At my LHS I can get both codes that I use for $1.25 a piece...

I bought all my track at wholesaletrains.com. On certain items (like switches) they were 30% cheaper than the LHS. I shop around at the main online hobby shops and think that generally wholesaletrains has the best prices (trainworld can be cheaper but requires more legwork since you have to call/email to check prices and availability). However, their selection is not as extensive as internettrains or internethobbies both of which are modestly more expensive. It sounds like you are going to be buying a lot of track and for an order of that size, S&H costs won't be material.
