In over 50 years of being in this hobby, I have built a number of smaller layouts, but never had the guts to embark on a longer journey by building a room filling "model train empire". Undoubtedly, the model railroading bug has bitten you and you seem to be as infested as anyone in here. I think the idea of having some kind of layout, just to be able to "play" with your trains should be your way. There are many ways to get something nice going, an alternative approach could be <a href="https://www.japanrailmodelers.org/pages/modelingjapan/minimodules.html" target="_blank">this</a>! I had great fun building this mini modules!
