This weekend I ran a train with DC on my modular layout that is going to be wired for DCC (some of it is currently).   I connected a second hand MRC Tech 2 powerpack to the rails in the middle of the layout with terminal joiners (I use these for my bench test track).  Took about 2 min once I had all the track in to have a train up and running (all new old stock off the shelf, no modifications, handrails not even installed on the atlas locomotive or tank cars). This hobby is only as complex as you make it.  <-probably the best advice you could give
