track grade

I am new at model railroading and am drawing a layout for a N guage.
I can't find any info on how steep the grade can be going up a hill. I will
have only 3 cars on my train.

You have only three cars now. Make sure to plan for the future. I wouldn't make the
grade any steeper than 2%. A three car train will get boring real fast.
