It is on an old plan that was grandfathered and so is quite inexpensive. The phone does all I need. I have a second one on a pay as you go plan that costs about $10 / month. Nothing new here, yard clean up should start next week. Bought another loco display case for the CP Hudson. Rapido has a very nice one for only $40. I have 5 of them now. Europeans first settled my area in the 1860s-70s. Before that, the land was fought over by various native groups. My great-grandfather came from Germany, through New York City, then by train to Ohio, and the final 900 miles he walked!
He got to his homestead as winter was beginning, so he dug a cave-like shelter in a riverbank where he spent the entire winter.
I think he was much more rugged than I am. I'm afraid I would have headed back to civilization after the first cold night.
Today I relax. Tomorrow, yard work begins.

I feel like we're at the point of the Polar Express movie where they tie themselves to the front of the locomotive. We're just hanging on here and hoping for the best outcome. I'm cinching up my rope now. They can't buck me!

For some reason, it reminded me of my father. As he waited in England for the day to cross the channel and fight through France, he, along with all the other soldiers, probably got very sentimental when Vera Lynn's song was played.
Vera Lynn was known as the "Forces' Sweetheart" for her songs she sang to entertain the troops. Great music!

Glad to see the Diner is open again. I understand there can be IT issues but I wish someone from Kalmbach would give us a brief note as to what happened.
John, Vera Lynn was one of my Dad's favourites. In his case it was waiting for night to go on a mission. After the briefing they had to wait all afternoon which was a very tense time.
We are having a cool, rainy spell here. Sure are a lot of migrant sparrows in the yard. At times at least 50 white throated. We did get a lot of the back yard cleaned up, another day should do it. It takes longer now as I don't have the strength or energy I used to have but I can still climb around the rocks by the pond so that is something. When I say rocks, I mean boulders as some weigh over a ton. The waterfall is made of rocks that were placed using a Bobcat by a fellow with amazing skill. It is on a slope so it looks very natural.
Not much else going on here. Think I will run a train or two.

I'll be back in a while, there are some Predators that need to be dealt with.
I'm glad to see The Diner is open for business again. I've stopped by every day for the past week but the door was locked. So Flo, a slowly poured Guinness and a Rueben please. Hold the fries. Just cut the grass for the first time this year. I enjoy winter here in Taxachusetts but summer is the way to go. Glad to see all your smiling face!

Good Morning Diners. Chloe, scrambled eggs and sausage patties please.
Been in a bit of a funk lately regarding working on the railroad. I still run trains every so often, but I just can't bring myself to work on much lately. Like Tony Koester talked about in a recent article. Inertia. Coming to the wrong time of year too. At least the railroad doesn't cost anything sitting there. In our old house when I had my reef aquarium, that cost around $30-$40 a month just in electricity whether I looked at it or not, and that was over 10 years ago. Then there was the cost of salt, supplements, food, water, etc. Still miss it though.
Kept close tabs on the NFL draft this weekend. It's always fun to see where some of my favorite college players go and to see how differently teams draft. Then there are the talking heads who "grade" each teams draft. That's comical! Apparently they all think they can see the future.
Brent, the end of the Canucks/Preds game was incredible. Absolutely great hockey. Stars play tonight, hopefully they can tie the series at 2. It has been a beating, with all the late games; tonight will be just as late on a work night.
I will echo what others have said. It would be nice if someone from Kalmbach would offer some insight into what's going on with the forum.

It's a beautiful, cool, sunny day on the Great Plains. Things sure seem better after a weekend with over three inches of rain. Of course, the downside is that there are many people cleaning up and thinking about rebuilding after the tornadoes that accompanied the rain.
Along with rain comes the downside -- the grass grows a lot faster. I'll have to mow today.
Charlie, I know you have a lot of bird feeders. My wife has a bunch, but has always had problems with how to hang them, easily fill them, etc. This past week, I finally built a framework for her. Six eight-foot-tall 4x4 posts connected by ten-foot-long steel pipes. She now has plenty of space for the feeders, and they are all with-in an easy reach for filling and cleaning.
Of course, digging holes, setting posts, climbing the ladder to bolt things -- I now have to take it easy so my knee can recover.
The layout is getting ignored again, which is an annual event. I hope to have some time today resting my knee, which means I may have time after mowing to have layout time. A scratch-build project is partially finished.

Union Pacific donated a bunch of cabooses to the state, and they are in a state park. They have been converted to hotel-like rooms that can be reserved. A neighbor went there a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed the stay.
Another cool, cloudy day here with showers.
Yesterday we had approx. 350 white throated sparrows in our back yard. Down to about 100 today. They only feed on the ground so we put out shelled sunflower seeds for them and then sweep up in the evening. There is a little gravel beach at the edge of the pond where they bathe and drink. In a couple of days they will be gone. Warblers are next.
I can relate to losing motivation on the layout. I haven't done anything on mine for at least 5 years. It is finished though. I ran my S4 with a short local yesterday so I still use it. The S4 was my last purchase a couple of years ago.
Time to think about lunch.
Bird time here, too. Our egrets are distributing themselves around the community. And, we've seen a couple of hummingbirds at the feeders out front, so it's time to once again gather on the porch for happy hour with the hummingbirds.

Weather Here is damp and gloomy so no yard work today. Have a few hours before meeting up with old friends to view a museum photography exhibit, then dinner. So it's off to the layout for a couple of hours. Hopefully will successfully finish installation of new speakers in two old LL P2K GP30's, which I have already gutted the original QSI decoders and replaced with Tsunami2's. This time of year with golf, Corvette activities, yard work, casual cycling there much less opportunity for trains. Got to take advantage of rainy days. On the bright side, when late fall rolls around again, I'll look forward to daily layout opportunities.

The last day of April is also the last day of cabooses! Or, if no one wants to move the diner, we can just keep cabooses for May also. We did lose a week of April, so that makes a difference.
Brent, that's an amazing photo of Vancouver. I've only been there once, and cruised out after spending a day there.
Charlie, your backyard sounds like a very neat place. Sometime you will have to post a photo or two of your pond and of your bird feeders.

We used to have friends with a saltwater aquarium hobby. It was beautiful, but I remember them sometimes complaining how much work it was.
MisterBeasley, we have a lot of birds here, and even though we are 1500 miles from any ocean, we even have lots of seagulls. The one we don't get much are Hummingbirds. People put out feeders and try, but we get very few. We are just too far from their migration routes. Hundreds of miles of cornfields aren't a good stopping place for them, I guess.
Chris, I see you mentioned your Corvette. What year do you have? My brother-in-law worked for GM at the Corvette plant in Bowling Green. We took a tour there and it was great! The museum was also worth the trip. (We saw it before the big sink!) It was amazing in the factory to see a car start being put together, and at the end of the line, putting gas in it and driving it away. Amazing.

John, it's a 1973 coupe. All original (save for typical mechanical issues, like carb, radiator core, water pump), 84K miles, Big block, 4 spd Metalic Orange (newer version of Ontario Orange). kind of proud still has original paint, original interior. My bride and I take it out once or twice a week. Better to run it than let it sit. The car and I are growing old gracefully I guess.
ive been to both the plant and the museum, also before the sink hole. Thinking of going back again, it's been around 20 years. Both are very interesting, even if you're not a Corvette or car guy/gal. I recommend it if you're in the area someday.

In March it was suggested that we take the Diner to some yards. That might be interesting.
