Forum Software Problem - Belated Discovery
Posted by richhotrain on Thursday, January 11, 2024 9:33 AM

For the past two years or so, I have been unable to access either the Classic Toy Trains forum or the Trains Magazine forum.

I just discovered that if, I am not logged in, I can read posts on those two forums but I cannot start new threads or post replies. If I am logged in, I cannot even read posts on those two forums.

At the very same time that this first occurred, I also began seeing 30 lines of computer code in red right above my screen name and avatar on the right side of each page. When these issues first arose, I contacted Customer Support to no avail.

So, now I am curious. Do any other members have similar problems such as the inability to read and post in any of the other Kalmbach forums? Or, the red colored computer code above their screen name and avatar on the right side of each page?

Nope, all fine here (Firefox on my android phone right now).  Is it a message about a Server-Side error, like "cannot access resource XYZ".

Rich,

I do appreciate having the forums Avaliable, but the list of issues is a very long one. Very few things seem to work properly, and it goes down on a regular basis.

 Things that don't work:

1. Posting pictures

2. changing avatar

Sometimes the forums go down, and usually it is all Kalmbach forums at the same time. This last time over New Year's it was just the MR forum that was down, but the others were working but responding very slowly.

You have mentioned new issues I haven't seen yet.

Paul

No, the red colored text is some sort of computer code. I refer to it as gobbledegook. Maybe it is HTML or CSS? Just a guess.

I still can't initiate a PM thread.  I have dozens of old ones that I must reply to and hope that the addressee doesn't have the missing red font to let him know that he has a message.  That is also my problem.  Five years now.  But, whatever....

You're not able to post pictures?  What photo site are you using?  I use imgur.com, and I usually don't have any issues posting photos.

John,

At one time, I used to be able to post pictures normally, embedded in the post. About 3.5 years ago, it suddenly stopped working. Not doing anything different. It will not allow me to paste the link in the box. Tried it with iPad and PC, same problem. The only way I can share pictures now is to share a link to a share folder. The plus side is that it is very easy to add more pictures to the share.

I also used to be able to change my avatar picture easily. About 2.5 years ago, this feature stopped working. Not doing anything different. The last time I discovered that if I make a new screen name, I could upload a new Avatar. Last year I tried this, and all I get is " unable to process your request ".

This is what I'm talking about; these forums are becoming more and more tedious.....

Paul

It also seems like different people have different problems, some things work for me, and not for them, and vice versa....

I have been wondering for roughly 4yrs, why MR site forums have all these problems with the sites fuctionality....then starting to spend more time on another site or Mag I subscribed to FSM which is also a Kalmbach Media site. I noticed they were having very similar problems but one thing was different. They were actually involved with their forum members in finding a solution........Soon after the problems were fixed and the mood of the forum members changed......they got more involved and seemed happier. Their hobby did not seem to be dying like some people have expressed on the MR forums.

I BELIEVE.....this should be a year of change......put the fun and enjoyment back in the hobby and fix whats broken and things will change, I gurantee it!

RICH:  Paste the code into one of the "504" threads that had comments by the two Kalmbach IT people.

What you have is a call to one of the Telligent back-end routines -- it needs a value pushed to some arcane register, and appears to be waiting to see that value before it 'unlocks'.  Someone with server access may be able to go in, with something like a hex editor, and enter that value -- which ought to cure the problem being displayed.

Post it again here, in full, so they can see it.

Overmod, that is a great idea and that does seem to be the problem. My one limitation is that I cannot post to that forum. That is a big part of my problem. So, I will post the gobbledeegook here and then ask someone to notify the IT guys on that other forum.

Value in a register? Hello 1964.

The cause is right at the top: There is a bad URI (Uniform Resource Identifier), basically it's calling a web hostname that doesn't exist.

Oddly, on my profile it says Manage Profile | Settings, without the word community. Wonder why they're different.

That's definitely Java/Javascript syntax .  Though, your user ID / links there also look "wrong" -- like before they moved from the old forums (uh ... near on 15 years ago?) to the current iteration.   Easy test -- clear out your browser cookies and caches (though note that it'll force log you out of websites, etc.)
