richhotrain SeeYou190 jjdamnit What do YOU consider the difference between Scratch-built and Kit-bashed??? I don't. I try to use the word "conversion" to describe anything I built. There are always commercial parts or a base model in there somewhere. How about "scratchbashed"? That is a term that I use often. Rich

This is what I do. Kit bashing is still too confining. I take the walls, roofs, windows, etc. and use them to custom build a strucutre to fit into the spots on my shelf layout. Almost all of the manufactured kits have a much larger footprint than what I need. Kit parts are basically used to scratchbuild, as the way I see it.

Isn't that curious?
I have noticed that as modelers are trending towards smaller layout, manufacturers seem to be trending towards large buildings.

The shape of the buildings I need should be long and narrow. If its a big square or rectangle it won't fit well as designed.
A lot of talk here about scratchbuilding this or that.
But so far as I can tell no one has asked the obvious question.
What experience does the OP have with assembling some of the more complicated plastic car kits, resin kits, or even some of the older wood kits?
Going from zero to scratchbuilding something which has no plans and is self-designed seems like a pretty big leap to me.
Hi maxman,
I'm not sure I agree. The brass critter in my avatar was my first scratchbuild. Before that I had only done a few BB kits. I think what is required is an ability to fabricate things. I developed mine while keeping my ancient and rusty MGB on the road when I was in my teens. If you can fabricate a large panel then you can fabricate a small panel.
I recognise that not everyone has those abilities, but that brings up the suggestion that several people have made which is to just go for it! The first attempt may be a disaster but I can pretty well guarantee that the second attempt will be much better.
Cheers!!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
saw in an ad the BEST has a large number of wood kits under 20 dollars. plenty to learn building techniques and experiment in kitbash and scratch build using them.

That is why I suggested starting with a no-holds-barred scrap box freelanced freight car.
You can't go wrong when there are no rules.

"One difference between pessimists and optimists is that while pessimists are more often right, optimists have far more fun."
The OOs original question was, “Do you guys have any recommendations on how I could get started?” To which there have been many varied but helpful replies assuming, and here I’m making a big assumption, that the OP is seeking to gain experience. So... maxman A lot of talk here about scratchbuilding this or that. But so far as I can tell no one has asked the obvious question. What experience does the OP have... …is irrelevant!! A bit like the off topic side discussion that has crept in on the definition of scratch building. The Bear.

I don't think so.
The original question was "how do I get started"?
What have you already put together seems a perfectly relevant question to me.
