Why is so much scale train track out of stock?
I would hope the answer would be Because all the other model railroaders are actively working on their layouts and buying more than the manufacturers can produce, but it is probably something different.

the same reason everything is out of stock:
1. the pandemic
2. supply chain problems
3. inflation
4. people have less disposable income and hobbies are not high on the list so small business income is down so restocking is down
5. nearly all model railroad products are made outside the USA and have huge lead times.
that should be enough for now. fifteen years ago I bought two 100 piece boxes of 3' flex track just in case I would ever need it, I should have put a portion of my investments into a large volume of track. As I remember thery were about forty dollars for each box which was roughly 40 cents per each piece.

Can you be more specific? I took a quick look at three retailers for Atlas HO code 83 track components, and everything I would usually order is in stock.
