Athearn Genesis bearing caps
Posted by hbgatsf on Sunday, November 20, 2022 7:54 PM

Upon unpacking an Athearn Genesis freight car I found that one of the bearing caps had come off.  I have it plus extras were included.

The problem is that I can't get it back on.  What's the trick?  I did manage to get it in place once but it wouldn't stay on.

I knurl the end of the axle by rolling it between a file and a piece of hard wood. You have to be careful to do just the very end of the axle or the truck won't roll very well.

Another way to make them stay on better is to squeeze the very end of the axle with heavy pliers to distort it slightly to make a tighter fit in the cap.

To put the cap on I lay it on a flat surface and push to axle down into it. A tiny drop of CA will help to retain the cap on the axle. The axle must be removed from the truck to do this.

That is the step I was missing.  Thanks.

Edit: Thanks again for the tips.  As I was removing the axle the other cap came off.  I used a piece of tape to hold the cap and pushed the axle back on it with no problem.  The other cap (which had come off in the packaging) didn't want to stay on so I pinched the end of the axle with pliers and that solved the problem.
