What a bummer! My Stewart Hobbies Atheran chassis was accidentally dropped and the motor and drive couplings detached from the chassis!I have heard that Atheran used double sided tape to mount up the motor ,but I had none on hand .So I reattached the drive couplings and added some liquid cement near the motor mounts and allowed it to dry for about an hour .I put the shell back on and re mounted the Kadee #5 couplers and lashed it up with my Atheran BB Pennsylvania SD-9.Ran it for 20 minutes and it runs as well as it did before the accident.Dodged a bullet on that one!

How old is the model?  Does it have threaded screw holes in the motor and corresponding holes in the chassis?  This could be Stewart's way of isolating the motor that wasn't originally isolated.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Mr. B might be on to something.  The motor mounts clipped on the motor, and what you see on the bottom, those little knobs, was what held it in place.  Athearn didn't use double sided tape, to my knowledge, and I have a lot of BB locos.

The "newer" version of what you have, there is a small screw that goes into each of the tabs, it expands the mount, to make it fit tighter.

Anyway, you got lucky!  Usually not a big problem anyway, I've dropped a few, and simply put it all back together again.

Mike.
