<p>Managed to find a DC power pack (recently moved).   Locomotive runs without binding, noise is less.  Slight click once per revolution, but not nearly as pronounced and the locomtive does not jerk to stop when it happens.  Possible main rod hitting the side rods.  Will have to look at it again in the morning. </p>
