The February issue had an article by M.R. Snell of a unique flatcar load. I had to have one. It also lead me to research the prototype which was fascinating. Luckily we had a train show (first since pandemic) and I was able to score an Athearn 85 foot flat on the cheap. For the load, I chose a very old Proto 2000 covered hopper. I built it in the early 2000s and just as soon as I finished it, it fell to the floor, ruining one end. I put it in the box and tried to forget about it, but now it could be put to good use. I had fun with the project and used it to experiment with new weathering techniques.

Hi cprfan, that looks pretty good. I watch a lot of Virtual Railfan on the Tube and Loads with damaged Stock including the Trucks arranged like your model are (alas) a reasonably frequent occurence.

That is a great model! The chain tiedowns are really well done. There is almost no sag in the chains. The weathering is excellent too!
It's too bad that there aren't any HO scale chain tensioners available. Precision Design Co. used to make a laser cut kit but apparently they no longer exist, and I couldn't find anything on eBay.

Nice modeling, I have seen loads shipped that looked just like that -- trucks and then the covered hopper.
Some years ago I photographed an interesting long flat that had been retired from whatever intermodal or autorack service it had been in and was now used for moving wrecked freight cars. There was one fixed bolster on the deck and one movable bolster so a car of almost any length could rest on those bolsters, and presumably would be well chained in addition.

Maybe you guys can check out: LONESTAR MODELS #12109, load tie downs. INTERMOUNTAIN (no #) HO tiedown sprue. HERPA MINITANKS #742283 or #1053 (why two #'s ?). SPRING MILLS DEPOT (no #) DODX tie down chains.
I remove the straight plastic chain (yes with see though links) from the above first three mentioned Manufactures and just use the ''Ratching turnbuckle'' part with real metal chain when I need the chain to curve over a item. If you look close at the INTERMOUNTAIN and the LONESTAR you will see identical sprues. The LONESTAR comes with deck anchors as does the MINITANKS.
I may have some ALKEM SCALE MODELS etched brass heavy duty tie downs laying around.

Great wreak details, so many times I have seen modelers use inexpencive cars for a wreak without detail but not here. Good work on the tie downs too.
