searching for a proto 1000 diesel part
Posted by Mister Mikado on Saturday, July 2, 2022 11:24 PM

Hi all, I purchased a new Life Like Proto 1000 FM Erie Built PRR but one of the brake cylinders on the forward end of a truck was lost in transit.  Does anyone have this part? Any color is OK. In exchange I have a load of my own spare parts to trade, tell me what you need.  Thank you!

PS:  there are two cylinders on each truck and they are different.  The one I need (circled) has the piston going to the right.

Everyone have a wonderful Fourth,

Rob

Pretty sure it is the same sideframe on the model as used on the PAs. I can send you the whole sideframe if you'd like.

Just for the hay of it, side frame castings used by FM were not the same as Alco, but the difference is subtle. I can't blame the manufacturer for reusing the molding, Some units used an entirely differrent truck.                                          "The model’s trucks are a compromise, as they appear to be the same and with the same sideframes as used on the Proto 2000 Alco PA and PB models. While these and the Eries’ GSC trucks share an identical wheelbase and a similar general appearance, they aren’t an exact match. The most obvious difference is a third brake cylinder on each side above the center axle, but the Erie-built trucks were also straighter across the top, without the curved steps of the Alcos’ trucks. Life-Like doubtless accepted this as a cost saving appropriate in a Proto 1000 model, and I expect most of us will find that it doesn’t seriously detract from the locomotive’s overall appearance." If you want to be a purist, replacement side frames are acvailable           9653 -HO Trucks, Diesel Power, FM Erie built, sprung, side frames only - Pkg. 1 Pair (americanscalemodels.com)                                                                                                                                                       "Most units rode on conventional General Steel Castings trucks, which looked similar to those used on the Alco PA but were actually a different design. This drove up the cost as it required new foundry patterns. GE design a welded truck that could be fabricated at the Erie plant, and was fitted to a number of units for UP, KCS, and NYC. However, most customers preferred the cast steel truck, and the engineering cost, jigs and fixtures and necessity for a second inventory meant that the fabricated truck design did not save money"  Here is an example of the GE truck on a HO model and on the KCS

Yes, they are the same.

I had to replace some missing brake cylinders on some Proto 2000 PAs. I couldn't find any until a seller showed up on eBay with some spare parts from a broken Proto 1000 FM Erie-built PA. I bought two trucks and salvaged 8 brake cylinders. They were identical to the Proto 2000 PA brake cylinders.

Before I sold my two pairs of Proto 2000 PA/PB locomotives, I had lost two of the brake cylinders either on my layout or under it. In total, I had lost 4 but found 2.

A word to the wise. When you get the replacements, glue them on. From the factory, they were press fit and fall off with the slightest bit of handling.

Question for all you proto 1000/2000 users.

I need several new axels (cracked gear problem).  Do the gp9 and gp18s use forty or forty two inch wheels?

Thanks in advance.

Which Proto geeps do you have?  Proto 1000 or Proto 2000?  Life-Like or Walthers Proto?

The Walther Proto 2000 GP7, GP9 and GP18 locomotives use 40" RP-25 contour blackened-metal wheelsets.

I have used the Athearn replacement gears and or geared wheel sets on Proto 1000 RS2s  and F3 units I have also used these on the GP9, GP18, FA1, FA2, FBs Proto 2000 units these are the 40 inch wheels and gears for the four axle Axle clone drives found on the Proto series.I think the 6 axle engines gears are different.

Thanks guys.  My locos are life like protos.  Some are proto1000, some are proto2000.  Good to know that the six axel gears are different.

Thank you

Ordered from Walthers today.  Before Covid I had tried to order from them and they told me my street address was invalid.  I guess they fixed their system, because I haven't moved.
