Another big brass jackpot at the local antique mall
Posted by emdmike on Friday, May 20, 2022 7:00 PM

Made a stop at the same local antique mall I found my last super deal on HO scale brass trains.  I was intending to buy the unpainted NKP Dynometer car that was still there.  But.....the dealer had added another Overland Models NKP S2 Berkshire for $125!!!!! in its original box none the less.  AND a NJ Custom Brass NKP Dynometer car, painted and boxed for $27!!!!   Soooo, both of those came home with me.  Now, after servicing the gearbox on the steamer.  I can run doubled headed brass NKP Berkshire engines.  I have less $$ in the pair than just one of the MTH diecast wonders sell for with no worries the diecast might suffer zinc pest.  I will have to get them painted at some point.  Enjoy the video of them running!

I know right?  Maybe then I could afford the Aster gauge one live steam NKP Berkshire, and a whole new raised railway in my back yard to handle that monster.  For now my garden line is 16mm narrow gauge live steam with 10' diameter curves.  Need to double that for a gauge one Berkshire.  I was floored when I went in there and seen those models so cheap, and I thought the last one I got from that booth was cheap, this one was $50 cheaper.   The expensive part is yet to come, will cost me many times the cost of them to get them both properly painted by a professional brass painter.

For now, and probably forever, my garden line is 5/8". It's called a hose!ClownSmile, Wink & GrinLaughLaugh

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I envy the fact that you have a backyard railway. I'm sure you enjoy it.

Indiana must be a really different kind of place from around here. I have never seen a brass locomotive for sale in an antiques store........ or any kind of "high quality" model trains. Very occasionally some old TYCO or AHM junk......

Seeing brass, especailly at these prices in an antique mall is a first for me as well.  The more typical is Lionel, American Flyer and various HO from Tyco to nicer plastic stuff.   This one single glass case has nice plastic HO, mostly all NKP stuff.  No clue if they are slowly selling an estate or what.  But I will keep watching it closely.

Since it is mostly one road it is likely someone selling an estate- dealers would have a greater variety. It also makes more sense with the pricing. I have seen some times it looks like people are doing an estate in an antique mall but not really trains. However I wonder even with cheaper prices if they are not netting more than a tag sale of the estate? Typically an estate agent charges 25-45% of the total (most to the higher end of this) and to be honest most are clueless about trains outside of Lionel. There are some cases they overprice- generally on a box of random stuff. However most of the times you can find a deal at an estate tag sale. There was one that had a table of mostly brass. Bought a United Rio Grande K28 for $60 and a Sunset N&W K3 (that some were bought by the Grande) for $80. The rest of the brass was higher but still less than market. Strangely there was a Bachmann Viginian Fairbanks Morse for $200! (The stickers were labeled so no one switched anything so no idea on that one) If there is a large collection the estate sales companies generally try to get it out as quickly as possible. There was one I bought a really large ziplock bag of engines for $7 that apparently they could not match. Got it, went out and sorted and went back in to buy the loose tenders. I spent $20 on tenders and found a Varney 4-6-0 that I missed for $10. So for 37 I had the following- An AHM 0-8-0, 4-6-4, an IHC 4-6-2, a Bachmann Texas, a Mantua 2-8-2, a Varney 4-6-0, and a kitbashed AHM Y6 that was lengthened to a 2-8-8-4. I needed to by a tender at a swap meet for $5 for the 0-8-0 and had an extra for the Mantua.  Really I only expected a couple of them to run- all did with a little work with the exception of the 2-8-8-4 which really needs work. Never know what you will find.

And in this booth, which is a locked glass display case, no chance of someone switching tags.  Great time to be a buyer!

My wife and I do our antique shopping in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. In the first three, especially the first, there's not much of an value. Full size railroad stuff is a different story. But down south? There's not much, but you'll find oddball stuff that some retiree moving to warmer climes left behind. I found a whole mess of Bowser steam kits in Georgia that would never have found their way into an antique store up north.

There are a few in VA and NC that have some things. We had a post a few weeks ago that listed some in VA and NC notably Verona Va and Thomasville, Mooresville, and Belmont NC
