Good morning, everyone.  Bacon, eggs, and black coffee please, Chloe.

The frequent rains mean twice-a-week lawn cutting.  Today's the day.

The marriage vows included 'for better or worse'.  I'm not sure which is on tomorrow's schedule.  My wife got tickets for us to go to the Downton Abbey movie.  This falls into the group of things that I will do for her, even though I really don't want to.

On TV, I saw a commercial for a medicine.  One of the scenes showed a woman putting a small figure onto a model railroad layout.  It was only on screen for about two seconds, so I had to run it back several times to make sure I saw what I thought.  I can't remember the medicine's name.

After the mowing, today's a big day on my layout.  I'm going to try to install the first of several bridges and connect the track.  It's scary!

Have a good day, everyone.

If you think your trackwork is scvary... you should see mine. Looks like a LION wit big furry paws was working on it.

Someday .... on my way to Teddy Roosevelt Nat. Park, I would love to stop by and see the subway.  Unfortunately, plans have changed again.

My daughters want me to come with them when they go to Israel and Jordan later this year.  I think I am going to postpone my North Dakota trip again.  Maybe one day I will be able to drop by the Abbey to surprise you.

Is is safe to surprise lions?

Trains on holiday:

The Nickel Plate 759 has the honor of heading a special train to the commemoration of the Golden Spike ceremony in May of 1969. Seen here on the morning after a layover in Cleveland.

I rode the 759 with my dad a few months earlier during her maiden run from Conneaut, Ohio to Buffalo, NY:

I had an estimate done yesterday for asphalt on the driveway . Bad timing on my part with the price of anything bituminous-related. Oh well. I'm going to go ahead with the job anyway.

Cheers, Ed

Here's a manual version of Dave's snow plow, the Northern Pacific Russell.

I think below may have been the rotary version.  Not the best picture but I would have liked the Inspector job popping a wheelie down the Hy-Rail in that taxi cab looking NomadStick out tongue

Uh Huh... We had our driveways done several ears ago. The city is repaving their roads now. The contracts must have been signed last fall so maybe they locked in last fall's prices.

Oh well, at least it is raining now.

Good Afternoon,

Expecting the rain to start again in a couple of hours. I hope to get on the roof before then to make sure the evestroughs are clear. I have determined that one cause of the water in the basement is the evestrough along the front. There is only one downspout and it is right beside the window well. In a heavy rain it is overloaded and the water just goes over the top right to the well. We need a new trough with another downspout at the other end. We have only one as my wife didn't want one beside the driveway as they don't look nice.

My Hornby Princess Elizabeth loco arrived today and it is a beauty resplendent with 18k gold plated running gear and handrails. The wheel rims are gold too. It was a model to commemerate the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Came with a section of track with gold plated rail. I got it for a very good price. Only took 16 days to come from G.B.

Did a grocery run this morning as we were out of grape jelly and oranges. The orioles are still here in force. We also have a red squirrel that is an orange junkie. I think he is the same one from last year.

If your driveway has an asphalt, head on over to CVS.  They're currently having a sale on PrepH.

Lots of trees around/near your house?  Maybe the downspout connection to the trough is plugged/blocked.  We get overflow when that happens.

Also suggest that you get one of those flexible pipe things that you can slip over the bottom end of the downspout to direct water away from the window well.

Maxman,

I clean the debris regularly and did so today. The problem is too much volume for one downspout. I have a long extension on the pipe.

I succumbed to a Coronation Scot a while back. My rationale was that this engine ran in the US and Canada, even on the New York Central through Cleveland back in was it 1939?

 Coronation-Scot by Edmund, on Flickr

I hope I can replace the OO wheelsets as the engine jumps a bit through my code 83 turnout frogs.

I thought OO trains could run on HO track? Hopefully Hornby has replacement wheelsets.

Ed.   The Hornby Coronation Set could be  an oldish model.   Altjhough it does run on HO track  the wheelsets are not fine to Code 83.  Hence the jumping at the frogs.

Good Morning Gang!  Flo, coffee in a Boston & Maine mug please, scrambled eggs, and bacon.  Thanks.

TGIF.  Enough said.

Lot's of graduation prep plans for my daughter this weekend, so its not like I'll have an easy weekend, but hopefully not bad.  We're having her open house at our church pavilion.  So glad we decided to have it there instead of at our house.  We would never be ready at home in time.  With such a late start to the spring weather here there is simply too much to do at home before hosting something like that.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Good Morning All,

A regular to go please ladies. Haven't been in for a while as life just got a bit overwhelming. We are in the middle of 7 race weekends in a row though I have opted out of three of them so far as we are just that far behind shop work.

It all started for me at VIR when I nearly lost one of my friends. We are all racing in our 70's, probably not the smartest thing we could do. I've known John since the early 80's when I first started vintage racing. Long story short, he passed out, hit his head and while I was trying to keep him awake and stop the bleeding from the fall stopped breathing and lost pulse. Fortunately the EMT's arrived just then though it took a bit to get him refired. John ended up in the Danville ER then medivaced to Durham and a week on back home to California. He is doing well now though he has a bit of therapy ahead of him. Scary stuff for me.

With the general backlog in the shop along with the mess overseas and at home I have just been out of sorts. Trains were the last thing on my mind. I am starting to emerge from the thicket now and just thought I'd drop in for a coffee.

Not to pick nits, but isn't that Nomad really an Olds wagon? Kind of upscale for a track car but...........      Time to pick up tools and earn a living.   Ciao, J.R.

Good Morning,

A cool day here, only about 40F for a high with cloud and wind. At least it has stopped raining.

That car TF posted is a '57 Pontiac.

Going out to the nursery for the final plant run. Then on to pick up more grape jelly and oranges.

Time for coffee.

Got a busy day scheduled.  I'll try to fit some layout time between other duties.

It's good to hear from everyone.  No train vacation photos from me.

My bad!

I stand corrected Charlie and JR.  You guys certainly know your classics.

Don't think the author knew completely what he was talking about in the article.

Side by side comparisons are always fun.

Similar, but huge differences I see now.  Only one painted roof strut that slants forward, curved glass in back and more pronounced tail fins like a Bel Air among other features.  The Nomad is definitely a sweeter looking ride.  Still like the yellow ones character too.  Looks like some sort of hot rod dwarf school bus manStick out tongue

I must say I like original wheels or at least of the era on Classics rather than those low profile wagon wheels though.  The taller tires had a lot to do with some of the suspension on those older vehicles.

Anyways, I was going off memory of the Nomad that Tim wrecked.

Oops!

Glad they didn't really wreck the real one.

Good moning

That BLT looks mighty tasty as I'd even have one of those for breakfast.  Is the sandwitch resting on a bed of nuts or is that a wicker placemat?  According to my new DT regiment, I'm supposed to stay away from seeds and nuts.  A BL with no T don't sound good and many of you here are a bunch of nuts.  Now what am I supposed to do? Gidday Chloe, a hot chocolate, please. Well, it’s finally happened, lit the fire the first time this year, and picked the last green tomatoes, and dug up the plants, though I’m rather optimistically seeing if the cherry tomato plant in a sheltered sunny spot which is still flowering, will actually continue producing.

OK some more boring snaps of the stations we stopped at on last weekend’s excursion.
We caught the train at Frankton Station, rebuilt in 1975. Like Taumarunui, function over form, though like most of the important intermediate stops on the North Island Main Trunk, mere shadows of their former glory.

Frankton by Bear, on Flickr

Taumarunui Station rebuilt in 1977, no longer specifically used for railway purposes, we just had long enough to stretch our legs. Because of our earlier departure from Frankton, Train Control was accessing whether our train could keep ahead of the following freight. We did.

Taumarunui by Bear, on Flickr

There is even a folk song, written in the 1950s about Taumarunui.

National Park Station, a 4th class station built in 1908, and modified several times since. We didn’t have time to get off, only dropping off passengers on the way down and picking up the same passengers on the return north.

National Park by Bear, on Flickr

Ohakune Station, the terminus for our excursion. a B class station built in 1908, again now only used by excursion trains, there is a coffee/hand knitted woollen goods shop and a hairdressers, at least the station is still in use.

Ohakune by Bear, on Flickr

Te Kuiti Station, another preserved 1908 B class station. We stopped here for about 25 minutes waiting for track repairs to be finished further north.

Good Morning All,

Well TF, welcome to the dark side. I've been on a rocks, grass and dirt diet for years now but it does have it's benefits. Last set of labs came back good and I've kept my weight down as well though probably not as well as someone like Brent.

That excursion looked lke fun Ja Bear. I was impressed by how smooth the trackage is in NZed compared to here. The commuter rail we rode between Pukekohe and Auckland was clean and bright and on time as well. Here in new England we have more commuter rail than the rest of the country but much of it suffers from lack of upkeep and the equipment often runs late especially when it is very hot or snowy.

Hope you all have a good day.  Ciao, J.R.
