Forum Browser & Computer.... What did you think this was going to be about a railroad?

While it is true that the LION had been absent from the forum recently, him was never far away. Anyway I have seen a comment that parts of the forum did not work.

But ask your self you must... Is it the forum that stopped working or is the problem in your browser. Ah, sea, there is the rub... nothing changed on the forum, but your browser has undergone many evolutions, and the World Wide Web as a whole has jetisoned many older protocols for the sake of security.

Ewe sea, when you download a web page, all you are downloading isd a page of cose and it is your browser that assembles it into the product that ewe sea on your monitor. It adjusts this according to the size and abilities of your monitor. Part of that code tells it to download pictures, and where to placed them, to down load other elements and how to handle them.

Some components of a web page depend on your computer and its operating system to carry out certain commands. THAT PAGE is taking control of your processor to do something for it! And THAT is a wide open dore for bad guys to destroy your machine. Protocol such as these anre now blocked by modern browsers, and you female dog : ) at our hosts for a crummy forum product.

Yes this forum is old, and apparently it does depend on some of these banned protocol. BUT THINK, changing a forum IS A BIG DEAL. As Steve said, Kalmbach does not get much return from this forum (discounting good will, of course) and would be loth to pay for a replacement.

And the truth be told, you would object to such an upgrade anyway as much of your current content and settings would go away with it. I remember what happened when people could no longer add their location to the text under their avitar.

By the way, since it your browser and not the forum that is causing your problems, you can download an older version of Firefox (LION suggest ver.53), and all of those features you have missed will come back to you. All Firefox back versions are available here: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

Here at the Abbey I have given up running our network. (25 workstations, 5 servers, and a competant firewall.) We have hired an outside vendor to manage our network for us. At over $2000 a month! What a deal I was, eh?

BUT THE REALLY BAD NEWS is coming to a computer near you soon. Its name is Windows 11. Security is becoming more secure, and you will have to enable this higher security in your BIOS, of else get a special chip to place on your motherboard, if your motherboard is new enough to take this chip. Perhaps Microsoft has a chip on its shoulder, but be that as it may, Things are getting more secure. Sure you can stay with Windows 10 until 2025, but then watt?

So give thanks to Kalmbach and crew for what we have!

I haven't seen any change to how the forum works as I have upgraded browsers.    But keep forgetting the recent drop of many scrips especially certain Java type s.  I would think stuff like pic reel will stop working soon considering how old that is.
might be in mr best interest to keep this forum running

The only subtstantial change, other than appearance, has been that PMs don't work very well.  I certainly don't get the red font appearing if someone initiates a conversation.  That's for at least three years now.

But, searches still suck.

Brother Lion, I queried MS when they offered to evaluate PCs for migration over to Win 11, and I was shown the door.  Apparently, my seven year old PC doesn't cut it.

To some extent, it's not just the changes to operating systems but also the proliferation of new systems and Browsers.  Each of these may require tweaking.  I usually use a small tablet now, but there are some things I have to do upstairs on the desktop, which still works fine with Windows XP and Firefox.

Yes, that was the issue that I was answering. And that is becuse your browser will no longer handle flash or what ever protociol they were using on the forum.

As for display, that is 100% controlled by your browser reacting to the size and resolution of your monitor and or video card. You have more real estate on your monitor and your browser will spread stuff out. you have less space aand they will get crowded together. Sometimes that right coluomn gets moved to the bottom, but that is all at your end and has nothing at all to do wiff the forum!

I notice how MS who stated Windows 10 was their last and that they would just offer upgrades to it went away pretty fast.

As far as Windows 11 is concerened, MS has maid errors before in underestimating what their public will tolerate, remember Windows ME.

Windows 11 is the same product as Windows 10, with a few new features added, tighter security, and a page that more closely apes that of Apple.

Cant even say they make the change to drive up revenue. If you have 10 you will get 11 for free if your puter can handle it.

When it says your puter cannot handle it, This is related to the TPM or Trusted Protocol Module. Your computer may have the TPM even if the review says you do not have it. Just go into you BIOS and enable the module. If it is not in your BIOS, tru getting a new BIOS, or else to check your motherboard to see if it has a place to (as socket) to attach the TPM, and then add it to your BIOS.

Most recen 'puters can do this.
