Recommendation on test loco
Posted by passenger1955 on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 7:45 PM

I need a couple of locos for testing decoder sound boards. My loco requirements are:

8-pin NMRA socket
headlight and backup light
onboard speaker (or spot for speaker)

I don't care about the shell ( I will just use the chassis)

Can someone please recommend an affordable solid loco? Ideally a link to a loco would be ideal.

Thank you

I believe most or all of what you want is offered by the ESU Loksound decoder tester 53900:

And you don't have to open it up to put the decoder in for testing.

Thank you. I need actual locos that I can use to test specific decoders with. Consisting etc.

I have been using some old MTH F units, but they only have 1 light and are getting old.

My choice would be the venerable Stewart/Bowser/Kato F unit chassis. If you find one wothout the 8 pin socket that is easy to remedy.

I have a bunch of Proto, Athearn, Intermountain and Broadway F units and, although they are "usually" mechanically sound with good motors there are often noises or pick-up issues that creep in.

I've probably had three-dozen or so of the Bowser-type and, other that a few bad motors in one short period, they have consistently been excellent and smooth running chassis.

When evaluating speakers, BTW, keep in mind the great effect the shell has with providing a baffle and amplification of the sound. I always evaluate speakers before, during and after a DCC sound upgrade.

I would at least modify a shell so that you could easily set it in place to get at least a little closer to what the final sound output would be.

Just my 2¢ anyway.

I would go with your MTH F units.  Just add a rear light to the chassis as your not using the shell.

A Bachmann doodlebug, lots of room and a good test for min. clearances on a layout.
