I saw this one on EBAY and the seller is very reliable.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/194170802665?epid=1300163326&hash=item2d357b51e9:g:OaQAAOSw1oRgs8V7

I have no financial interest in that seller. I ahve bought from them many times.

Way too what?  Expensive?  Rapdio has Metra F40PH's coming too, but they are twice as expensive as the one on eBay.

Or just a shell for the painted Metra F40PH is what I am looking for too.

I'll look around and see what I got.  I know I have a Spectrum "undecorated", I may also have a shell.

The Spectrum is DC.

Give me few days, I'm gimping around with a cane right now, waiting "in line" for a hip replacement.

You should probably mention your budget...

To my knowledge, the following make/made HO F40phs in increasin order in price:

Bachmann - nose area dimension are inaccurate, makes it look weird

Walthers Trainline - undetailed, but good drives, atleast dimensions are right.

Walthers Mainline - slightly more detailed, but less detailed than kato and costs around the same

Kato - excellent model for the price. used to be the most detailed F40ph before rapidos were released. Amazing kato drives.

Rapido - well, its rapido...

If you can't afford a Kato engine Id try and look for a walthers trainline f40ph. Dont expect any prototype specific detail though...or any seperately applied detail besides for a horn.

s far as trying to find a memeber on the forums that just happens to be selling a Metra F40ph for a good price right now...well good luck. Id advise you to go onto Buy sell trade (BST) sites like in facebook marketplace or group.io and post a listing looking for such an engine.

Good luck!

It Depends:

Rapido F40PHs are the best but are very expensive

Life-Like F40PHs have the best proportions of the cheaper models but have abysmal mechanisms and detail

Walthers Trainline F40PHs have excellent drives and are very cheap. But are just a little off (Nothing too noticeable from what I read)

Walthers Mainline F40PHs are the same shell as the Trainlines but have added detail

Bachmann F40PHs are the worst when it comes to proportions and have a mechanism in between the LL and the TL when it comes to quality

Kato F40PHs have the best mechanism but just look wrong

I hope this helps

What's your budget?

A couple of F40PH locos have sold for around $40 to $50 on eBay recently. Two are up for auction right now and the bidding is between $70 and $80.

First thing I think of is the high pitch whine that appears when voltage is at one or two or three volts.  Could that be cause?
