Micro Engineering Turnout issues, springs do not work right
Posted by cats think well of me on Friday, September 24, 2021 12:48 PM

Hi all,

I purchased four Micro-Engineering Code 70 #6 LH turnouts and two of them have an issue where I cannot throw the points without it going back to original position. They want to stay on one side and not hold on other side when I push points over. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to fix it? I'd like to try fixing myself as I'd like to get the track laid and everything running sooner over later.

Thank You

I've had some that the stock rails and points were not ground smoothly enough to allow the points to close tightly against the stock rails. In an extreme case this might cause the points to spring back instead of locking in the new position.

Be careful when soldering Mico Engineering switches and track. The plastic that they use seems to more heat resistant that most but it puts out some really nasty fumes when it gets hot.

Second, ME uses a soft Nickel silver alloy, bends more easily than say Atlas. I found the turnouts were easily bent...

I suggest that the ease of bending ME rail is due to its closer conformity to the prototype cross-section, not their choice of alloy.

Due care should be taken, either way.
