Add Pencil Grips to Your Hobby Knives
Posted by cefinkjr on Thursday, September 23, 2021 6:53 PM

The purpose of these "Pearlized Sticky Pencil Grips" is to allow people with large hands to easily grip pencils or pens that have fairly small barrels.

These grips are made of a soft vinyl and slip -- OK, they have to be forced -- over the barrel of the pen, pencil, or, in our case, an Xacto or similar hobby knife as shown in this picture:

Used on a hobby knife, one of these grips gives you much better control of the knife.  As a bonus, when you put the knife down on your work surface, it stays where you put it (and doesn't roll off onto the floor or, worse, your lap).

Another bonus: Each grip that I bought is in a tiny (~2" square) zip lock bag -- perfect for a temporary home for small parts.

I bought these from Amazon 3 years ago for a non-model railroad project but they ought to be available from a local office supply store.  I paid all of $6.19 for a package of 4 dozen.

Thanks Chuck, I may have to check these things out, sounds like a better idea then what I have been using. As the fingers and hands start to ache I some times look for a more comfortable way to use our modeling tools. I must have muti-colored items.

That's odd.  I can see the photo I posted and the photo in the post following yours.

For many years I used the triangular grips sold for drafting lead holders: they effectively keep the knife from rolling when set down as well as give a better grip control.

There are amazingly more 'ergonomic' designs for pencil holders that could be converted to knife holders.  See for example the selection here:
