New Proto 2000 GP9 problem
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 6:36 PM
I recently purchased a new Proto 2000 GP9 Phase I with sound and DCC. The quality seemed good and the DCC and sound worked perfectly. This is my first with sound so I'm not an expert. Unfortunately, the engine had a construction problem that I could not fix. So I sent it back to Life-Like carefully following their instructions. Two questions? Anybody have a similar problem? What can I expect from Life-Like? Thanks.

Perhaps you could expand on the problem?

Sorry for not explaining the construction problem. The body was not properly attached to the underframe. A screw was missing, but there was nothing to screw the screw into, if that makes sense. It wasn't just a missing screw which I would have fixed. I didn't want to start tearing it apart as it appeared something was missing. So I shipped it back. I'm mainly interested in what others have found with Life-Like's work and return policy. I had already waited several months for the back order at Walthers to be filled. I was dissappointed in their quality control for a new product. Even a cursory look was all it took.

Hmm. When I recieved my ABBA set of FA units there was a specific note about screws that attaches the body to the chassis.

While not specific to your engine, you should have with you a instruction sheet that carries part ordering information. Write to life like and ask them for parts.. they should supply you with the proper screw.

I am waiting on the 2-8-8-2 with the QSI also from Life Like.. I'll be sure to check those screws =)

They DO use the same body castings as they used for the non-sound units. However, with the sound there is a new chassis. It's VERY possible that this 'missing' screw is something that would have been there on a non-sound unit, but with the change in chassis no longer applies. And they didn't go to the expense of making a new body casting just to remove one screw hole.
Those screws inside the fuel tank are annoying anyway - on all 3 of my GP-7's I have removed them for good. The screws through the coupler pockets hold the body shell on just fine, thank you.

I have four P2k Phase 1 locos. Two with sound and DCC and two without sound. The locos with sound don't have a screw between the coupler pocket and the front of the truck. However, they have two screws behind the truck. On the locos without sound it's the reverse. A screw behind the coupler pocket and no screws behind the truck. Just to clarify it a liitle more, where there's no screws, there's just holes. I believe this was by design and not faulty manufacturing. Hope this helps.

In my previous post I forgot to mention that these are the new P2k GP9 Phase 1 locos.
