Weekend Photo Fun - June 18, 2021 to June 20, 2021
Posted by dti406 on Friday, June 18, 2021 7:49 AM

This is the thread where modelers can post finished projects, projects in process or just photos of their layout or layouts that have impressed them.

Good morning from sunny and warm Northeast Ohio!

Got a couple of cars done this week.

Bowser ACF 1958CF Covered Hopper kit, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red then lettered with Herald King Decals. This is the sixth car I have done in this series the D&TSL used these cars to haul very high mineral content silica sand for use in the glass factories around Toledo and elsewhere and also used in making toothpaste.

Athearn FMC 5347CF Boxcar Kit, underbody detail was a little sparse so I added all the brake air lines and rodding to the underframe. Car was painted with a mixture of Scalecoat II Big Sky Blue and ATSF Red then lettered with Herald King Decals. The Columbus and Greenville bought into the IPD Boxcar craze of the late 70's and invested in various types of cars.

Finished up the plastic plant and pellet handling facility that will be installed at the Strongsville Club layout this weekend. Used a few Walthers kits and a lot of Pikestuff wall pieces and Evergreen plastic pieces to build this facility.

Atlas C-425 and Stewart U25B hauling a mixed freight on the Strongsville Club layout.

Thanks for looking!

Rick Jesionowski

Rick .... Thank you for starting Weekend Photo Fun .... Your D&TS covered hopper is very nice. I like the boxcar and the plastics plant too. The NH locomotives look great .

I'm posting another picture of the Mrs. Hippy River Bridge this week. An ore train pulled by Northern Pacific F-units is crossing the bridge.

Rick: These are really nice looking cars and the plastic plant looks great. Thanks for kicking off this edition of WPF.

Gary: What a great shot! I love trestles and ore cars!

A few weeks ago, I found this Pacific on Ebay. I thought it was an Oriental Powerhouse, but a closer look proved me wrong: it is the loco of the infamous Walthers circus train. On the plus side, the boiler is far superior to the Powerhouse, with separate brass details. But I had to do quite a bit of work on it: the valve gear would "fall off" when putting the loco on its back (fixed that by adding small braces). The frame was a bit crooked, causing shorts on curves. The front truck would short - changing the pressure spring fixed that (trial and error solved it, phew!). It also came without a tender - I had an extra one in my spares box so that was not a problem. I kept the original can motor, but added DCC. Anyway, it runs great now, and it fills a gap in my passenger service...

Go Habs go!   Simon.

Gidday All, on a cold wet Saturday morning, down under.

Rick, thanks for kicking us off, I’ve realised for a while now, the variety of uses that covered hoppers were put too, and though I’ve been concentrating on my cement haulers, I can see that I’ll have to get some more for other services. (though I’ll finish what’s on the work bench, first!!)

Garry, what can I say excepting, yet again another great scene from the Heartland Division, even if there is no CB & Q in sight!!SadWink

Simon,I hope you don’t mind when I say that your offering has given me some cheer, as I sometimes think that I’m the only one who ends up with projects that require far more input than I originally thought!! An excellent result, however!

Well, my covered hopper work in progress didn’t this week, so I’ll leave you with this shot taken when I was in my “lets pretend I’m O. Winston Link” phase. (No disrespect meant to his fabulous work!)

Rick.  Thanks for starting WPF.   Lovely looking cars.

Garry  I like the bridge  and the name.

Simon   A  good looking end result. Well done.

Bear.   That is some bridge.

In the box I got from a family member was a 'beat up' crane.   With some repairs and alterations I made it into a representation of a steam crane of 1896.   Just what I wanted for Clarence Dock  part of the layout.

The 4-6-2 that Walthers sold for the Great American Circus Train could not pull even half of the train collection as it came from the box.

I knew a couple of people that were very disappointed with it and instead they used diesels to pull the train. One of them custom painted a pair of Stewart F units to do the job.

Glad to hear this one is serving you well.

Yes Kevin, I should have mentioned that I also added weight. There is a lot of room for that..

Bear.   That is some bridge.

Yes, it is quite something, it was built by friends of mine, Dave and Leanne, and if you can put up with the Bear wittering on, (or hit the mute button) you can see it in full glory at 6.30 on this older video.

Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Another great weekend of photos!

Rick, thanks for the start.  I really like that plastics and pellet facility.  I like the details on the roof!

Garry, that's a great-looking bridge.  Lots of work making that!

Simon, that's a nice find on Ebay.  You've turned a so-so buy into an amazing model.

Bear, that's an amazing photo of the train and bridge.  Beautiful.  The video really shows how neat it is.

David, nice photos of the crane.  You have a real talent making railway scenes look real with all the debris and junk along the line.  It also looks like your scene recently had some of that English wet weather.

Peter, I've mentioned in the past that your photos are some of the most realistic looking scenes ever.  Your water looks great!

I don't have any photos this week.  Thanks to everyone so far for keeping this thread so interesting.

Thank you John.    An old picture taken 'just after the rainfall'.

I have to keep re-doing it every so often.

Simon, Bear, David, and John York 1 ...... Thanks for commenting on my photo.

Simon .... Your upgraded 4-6-2 is excellent.

Bear ..... I like the big steam loco on the trestle. The picture does remind me pf Mr. Link's photography.

David .... I like the old crane. I recall seeing an old crane at the British Railway Museum in York, but it was not that old.

Peter .... Very nice water scene.

I should have mentioned that I also added weight. There is a lot of room for that..

My three pacifics are an Oriental Powerhouse, Key light USRA, and PFM (United) SOUTHERN PS-4. None of them are great pullers, but with my short train lengths, they will serve my needs fine.

I almost bought one of the Great American Circus Train pacifics at a train show once, but when I decided to buy it was gone already.

That happens a lot to me.

Yes well, I've been looking out for an Oriental Powerhouse for several months, when I saw and bought this one. I found space under the cab and in front of the loco to add some weight. Someone mentioned that problem in a thread started by Deluxe  a few years back. So I added weight while I was in there... USRA Pacifics with nice details are hard to find. The Bachmann's are nice but are not cheap, with molded details too.
