On the production front, we should also consider the demand for merchant ships, and the steel involved in building of shipyards.

Simon, you made some excellent points. I saw the John Brown a few years ago and I was simply amazed that it was possible to turn out the volume of these that were manufactured during the was years.

First off, the war years were different depending on where you were. Butter was rationed but was wasted here in the states as some service men had no regard for rationing and just wasted things like butter. You talk about the great depresion, well my family ate well all through it, not because they were rich but because they farmed and had plenty of food but no money to go into town for things. On to the so called B-17 bomber that someone said was drawn, looked like a real pic to me you should see the YB-40, a B-17 with a massive amount of guns and two top turrets, if you study WW2 you will find all types of strange things that were built but never used even in things like rifles, some were made to shoot around corners
