New Digital Magazine Access & Download Problems
Posted by BillKi on Sunday, March 28, 2021 12:32 PM

Hi All

I'm wondering if someone out there might be able to help me solve my digital magazine access problems.

I'm using an iPad, but I also have an issue on my iPhone. Link to new magazine archive site works well. On the iPad, when I fill in the data required to access the open archive (and get access to reading a mag) the cells all accept the required data, but the button you push to send the data does nothing more than indicate it has been pushed .... no matter how may times you push it.  Any suggestions of what I can do to make that activate at my end?

On my iPhone everything works fine (just a pity it is too small to be a device to read mags) EXCEPT when it comes to download the magazine to my device to read it off-line when I'm away from network access, which is, afterall, the main purpose of a digital subscription and although the Zinio version had limitations one thing it did do was allow you to read off-line.  On the new system I can see a download arrow (which only appears to send you a unnamed/unnotated zip file) but no method to download a named copy of the magazine which I could read in iBooks.  I can't see a fix for that, and if that is the only option available on Apple devices then my days of subscribing to a digital version are about to end.

As a comparison, on my MacBook I can get access and I can see the same download arrow (leading to the zip file) but next to it is the option of downloading an unnamed/unnotated pdf version.  Unfortunately I am away from home most of the week and only have my iPad (with no current access) and my phone (with only zip file access) so the fact that I can download a pdf on my computer doesn't solve my problem.  I know that I could download the pdf then eMail  it to myself but it would be a big file and I cannot believe that Kalmbach is seriously offering an alternative (no choice) to Zinio which is way less than the basic access Zinio offered (ignoring the fact that they are probably saving a bunch of $$$ with their new access).

So there must be something I am not seeing or doing correctly.  Anyone out there experiencing the same problems and found a fix for them?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Yesterday when I tried to access the May issue of MR and Trains all I could get was an error message, yet today I tried again and everything worked fine with no problems at all. I didn't know if it could have been having issues on my end or if things are still getting worked out in the system.

Hi, BillKi --

I can replicate your problem exactly, but I can't fix it.

The only success I've enjoyed has been from a PC desktop browser, where I can save a named PDF file using the rightmost "Download a PDF" widget on the bottom toolbar -- a widget that doesn't appear within any of my iPhone browsers (Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera). The "Download All Pages" dialogue isn't useful anywhere, unfortunately.

Overall, I'd surmise there hasn't been thorough cross-platform and cross-browser testing ... and I'm not sure if that desktop browser widget appears as an intentional choice, or as an accidental inclusion that will be disabled eventually.

Just wanted you to know that your question got my attention. Sorry I can't help!

Just the opposite for me, yesterday it worked, today it doesn't.

During the time it took me to post, it did work.  There is an option to download the left page, the right page or all pages.  All pages does nothing.  Left or right downloads a jpg of the page.  Cumbersome at best.

We have 10 or 12 separate threads on the new site.  One of them said that the OP's expectation of downloading an issue was not an option.

I have just looked through the forum posts and, as you say, there are a lot about dissatifaction with the the new Trains.com and access issues.

My concern (it being time to renew my subs) is that seeking official replies only gets me "its-an-issue-at-your-end" replies.  If only they would say outright that a particular feature is not available then I would make a decision (about subs) and move on using my money to best benefit for my hobby.

It's hard to see Kalmbach in its current guise being and industry leader in terms of building more modellers.  Right now they seem to be focussed on making $$$ over giving service ..... but, hey, isn't that the way of so much in our world nowdays.

Hardly a "team building" attitude.  More a "every man for themselves".

I'm replying to my own post here. BillKi, the iOS Firefox browser, at least, has a "Request Desktop Site" option, and that returns the little overlapping pages widget in the reader's bottom toolbar. I haven't figured-out how that Download PDF option works within this browser, though (that is, where the PDF file is stored), but you might know.
