Posting Videos
Posted by ROBERT PETRICK on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 9:24 AM

I've posted a few photos before, but never a video (or, more specifically, a CAD animation .WMV file).

A lot of folks here have YouTube channels, and many more have posted links to others' YouTube videos. How is that done? Are videos handled in the same manner as photos? There's a little icon in the tray above this text box, but I've never clicked on it. I have a general file-sharing app (Hightail). Can that (or some other similar service) serve as a video hosting site? Or do I need a YouTube channel?

I'm a fairly high-tech sort of guy, but I'm only high-tech in areas that I'm high-tech in. Just wanting to branch out and add a new tool to my belt.

Thanks.

Robert

Here's a video from my You Tube channel:

I right click on the video, click on Copy Video URL,

Go back to my post, click on the film/video icon, a box opens up, Paste the link you copied in the Source bar, click OK, and a gray box appears.

When your done with the post, and click on Submit Your Reply, the video appears.

Just like with a photo, you need the video to be hosted on a website somewhere.

A file sharing app probably won't work, but I can't say so definitively. If there's a URL associated with the video in the app, it may work.

You have two ways to post a video via the little button - you can link to it just like a photo, or you can embed the video in the post. You Tube very conveniently will provide the link or the embed code. Using the link method Mike did limits you to the small box size while watching it on the forum. Using the embed code gives you more control over how the video will be displayed, and gives the viewer the freedom to go to full screen without leaving the forum.

One other option for posting a video - find a friend with a YouTube channel who's willing to load the video onto their channel, and then post it on the forum from there. Matter of fact, if you'd like, you can send me the video and I'll put it on my channel, and you can post it from there (NOTE: This is not a general offer to do this for everyone! It's a one-off thing). Let me know.

Hey Mike and Mark-

Thanks for the info. It looks like the workflow is very similar to posting photos.

And double thanks to Mark for his generous one-time offer. I'll send you a PM to see how this might work. Then I'll try to get a YouTube channel of my own or something so that I won't have to pester others.

I uploaded a couple of animated videos to Mark's YouTube channel and then posted a new reply in my layout build thread. I'll need a little more info and practice, but I think this new adventure might actually work.

Thanks.

I had a few issues using the embed option. Here's a re-post of the post I posted on my layout build thread. The image takes up more width than the screen allows. Is there a way to limit the size of the embedded video? There are some numbers in there that look kinda promising. What should they be set to to fit the MRR Forum screen?

Thanks.
