Shell Removal from Proto 2000 HO E7A locos - Help Needed!
Posted by mobilman44 on Monday, January 25, 2021 2:33 PM

Hi !

I'm usually pretty good at "shell removals" but this one has me stymied.  I've got two Proto HO E7a units, in the beautiful Illinois Central paint scheme.  I'm readying them for a new owner, and need to remove the shells for mailing.

These are pristine, and I can't risk doing damage - so I seek your help!

Thank you, and please be safe!

I've got an E6, so the screws in the usual places: coupler boxes, under the trucks, by the fuel tank, or hidden by the fuel tank, don't do it?

Ahh, the usual suspects........  Well, the coupler screws are just for the boxes and don't enter the body.  There are no screws under the trucks.

There are 2 small (!) screws on either side of the fuel tank.  I'm hesitating with these as they are small and don't seem adequate to hold the shell.

If I don't hear from anyone else, I will of course give them a try.

There are no screws to remove. There are 4 tabs above the fuel tank, two on each side. The shell lifts off the chassis as the shell is released from the tabs.

The instructions in the Manual clearly state how to do this. If you don't have the Manual, I can run down to my layout and copy the instructions for you.

Well, the four screws are meaningless (for shell removal).  However, I did get the shells removed by spreading the body and shaking a bit.  I did that at first, but apparently not enough to do the job.

Thank you for your help!
