MR February cartoon

The cartoon in the current MR brought back a lot of great memories for me. I grew up in the Baltimore area and there used to be a restaurant called Hamburger Junction at Harford Rd & Joppa Rd.

They had tables and a very long counter. The food was served on Lionel flat cars with saucers attached pulled by a Lackawanna H24-66. Man did that thing roar when running along the counter. Lots of B&O publicity pictures on the walls too. I remember the cheeseburgers and fries were pretty good too.

A saw the cartoon, but did not see the humour. I thought maybe they forgot to include the caption.

It felt like I was reading The New Yorker for a bit. I don't understand that humour at all.

In North Fort Myers, there was Daddy Dee's Ice Cream that used to deliver treats by train.

Hello All,

My wife was a backup singer in a band in Pasadena, California.

One of the bars that her band used to play at had, what must have been a G-scale, train running around the bar area and over the stage.

One night the train derailed and landed on the guitar player's head cutting him badly enough that he had to go to the emergency room for stitches.

It was a Saturday night past midnight. The ER was probably a mess with traumatic injuries from shootings and car accidents.

Can you imagine the look on the admitting nurse when they were first told a person had just been hit by a train and was on their way in...

Then, this guy shows up needing just a few stitches from a model train falling on him?

When I saw that cartoon I immediately thought of that incident.

The cartoon itself wasn't funny but the memory it triggered was.

Go figure!

More than a simple loop of track here:

I recall as a kid our local Revco drug stores (chemist) used a Lionel train to take written prescriptions to the pharmacist in the back of the store and once filled brought the medicine back to the front check out.

Yep!  I thought it was the worst cartoon in the history of cartoons.  Didn't understand it at all.

Such neat memories.  I guess it went over my head.  I like cartoons that don't require a lot of thought.

I thought it was a cute play on "round".  Have a round at the roundhouse.  Trains and drinks seems to be a staple in Jeffrey's Diner....

A highly different interpretation and implementation of "Oscar" in a model-railroad context than Walthers used... 

And I wonder if a modern update to the idea of the Flaming Sundae would still be politically correct if it were to be delivered by train?

Buffalo Phil's in Wisconsin Dells still serves their food by rail - just about every table has drinks and kids meals served on a G scale train.  There's even a layout near the back.

I was only a child, and only ate there a few times, but I remember it.

And there have been more than few restauants in this region with trains running aound a shelf above the room.

If I remember right the Casey Jones was served in a large glass mug like at A&W root beer stands.
