I am at that point where I am unpacking my rolling stock and running into all sorts of problems, many because things were bought and never examined. Now some things were damaged in box like a broken brakewheel or coupler but many are me not going over newly aquired stuff from long ago that is part of what I will use. Just in couplers things like hornhook, mantua and even a loop & pin set, besides ones that broke or were improperly installed or even painted shut by someone long ago. Also found plastic wheels, cookie cutter type among others or old metal wheels. Had one car that had a weight break loose in a derailment and prototypically broke out boards on the side of the car in a derailment (it is a wooden car), in fact the weights the person used were brand new carbide teeth for machining tools that sell now for $5 each. So the point of this (most repairs have been made at this point) is what have you found when you drug out old items you thought were fine.
I always very carefully packed things up, except once. When I pulled out a couple of steam locos, both were broken and missing wheels
They were packed well but some not well enough, most were just never examined or were glued or pressed on boxs in the case of couplers, many bought over the years on ebay.

Right now all my train stuff is packed away for the house remodel.
In a few months, I might have a very long answer for you.

Living the dream.
I really don't like putting things away that need work, but I have had to because they wouldn't.........................work. I needed parts, and those took time to locate, to purchase, and then to get the gumption up to tackle the job.
I routinely lubricate the outer works and journals of steam locomotives. When I put them away in their cartons a week or six later to swap out liveries and types, I leave a small note on top of the foam stating the locomotive's last known condition and when it was lubed. Rolling stock that needs work gets sat on the slab supporting my nether staging track ladder so I know when I look that 'they' need some work.
Otherwise, I put stuff away carefully, often in larger boxes surrounded by popcorn foam bits, or passenger cars go back into their original packaging. I get very little damage ever, certainly not when I open newly purchased/received items. Not so far, but then I only purchase one loco a year, on average, and maybe two cars of any type.

Well, I was thinking more of the Crystals, but the song was actually sung by the Blossoms, and the lead was Darlene Love, whose real name was Darlene Wright. But that's not important.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!! But in reality they were all packed well but even well packed an item will not take endless abuse and when I moved the crates were sometimes handled by others than me. Also we are talking wood cars so temp and humitity did there part. Bought a NYC container car while in new place and it was fine on receiving and inspection but it developed cracks in the siding and a coupler fell off that was glued on (no room for a screw) but I repaired it. Got one I am working on now as trucks are not as free rolling as I would like, no problem to fix but it was not noticed before as the car looks perfect.
