Identify trucks
Posted by wblock on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 8:23 PM

I was given this, and a matching obs, but they have the old style Rapido couplers.

I don't know much about trucks. Can anyone tell me what type of coupler-mounted trucks I would need, and possibly a good source to buy some?

  Thanks.

Obviously my effort to paste a photo didn't work. Using Insert Image made no sense. It asks for a source with no way to choose a file.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Go back to the top post in General Disscusion" by Steve, on "how to post photos".

The photos need to come from a photo hosting site.

More precisely, the Kalmbach software is intentionally set up not to store uploaded image files.  You need to provide an URL to each image -- something a casual computer user likely won't have unless he hosts his own Internet or Web site.

The typical way posters here get an URL is, as Mike noted, to get an account on one of the free photo hosting sites, and then use the URLs that site assigns to the images you upload to it when you post here.

Note that some sites do not like 'hotlinking', which is what the little Kalmbach image-insert tool tries to do when you run it.  The sites usually provide some method of embedding or linking, but it can be touch-your-nose-with-your-elbow confusing for non-gamers to figure out how to do this the first time on a number of current sites.  I encourage you to search the Kalmbach forums to get more specific information and advice on how to do this.

Hi,

You may have the Rivarossi or Con-Cor trucks which have a long-shank coupler attached. Early ones had a metal spring holding them in and later ones (post 1980 or so) just snapped in.

McHenry once made a replacement that easily snapped in place. I really don't know if they have been produced recently but you might find them on the secondary (eBay) market.

MCH 52 53 or 54 were the model numbers for lightweight, heavyweight and baggage/RPO cars.

Are you trying to replace the couplers, or the trucks, or both?

I had WBLOCK email me his picture to post for him until he figures out how to post his own.

'Rapido' is the give-a-way, but it was not noted. It is N-scale.

There is a 'Micro-Trains' coupler with a 'T' on the shaft end and a spring that will slip in the truck shank? I need to go look at what I have. I has been a long time since I messed with N scale.

Check out Micro-Trains magne-matic couplers #1134 and #1022 (couplers only).

Then check out,

#003-42-051 (1017) four wheel passenger truck and adj. coupler set.

#003-42-051 (1017-S) silver four wheel passenger truck and adj. coupler set.

I was wondering what the "old style" coupler was.

When I saw the words "old style" the first thing that came to my mind was 'Hook and Loop'.Hmm Then I saw 'Rapido' and thought N-Scale. Some times my mind works too fast.

Then again...sometimes it works too slow.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The cars are MiniTrix and have Rapido, truck-mounted couplers.

Here's a stupid question, but is there any way to connect Rapido and knuckle couplers. I'm going to buy new trucks anyway but I'm just cyrious,

If you are not planning to uncouple the cars, the "Unimate" coupler is an N scale option that pops in place of the T-shank "Rapido" style coupler.

I used these in N scale on my passenger trains.

These will also couple to a Micro-Trains coupler, but you will need to lift the car to get them to uncouple.
