Mr.Mathyou,

I also have a version of the very locomotive you describe. It is one of Bachmann's upgraded standard line F-9s. According to my notes, these started being made in 1999 to bring their poor quality "trainset" line (my term) up to a more competitive standard. I agree that the paint on the shell can be alot better than it is. But because of its improved drive it makes a good candidate for a first custom paint job. All one needs to do is sand off the lettering with 2000 grit sand paper, and you have an undecorated shell with which to make a work of art. This same drive is now used in their FT. If you so choose, the upgraded F-9 can be ran in conjuction with the FT. I have only seen this upgraded F-9 in "The Challenger" train set. But I am sure it has been used in other recent Bachmann trainsets sporting an F-9 locomtoive.

Glad I could render some useful information.

James.
