If I read your question correctly, you are looking for switchstands that are just cosmetic and rotate with the movement of the throw bar ?

If that's the case, you might want to check out the Rapido switch stands ....

Hi Ed,

There are several manufacturers:

Rapido makes turnout motors with several styles of operating switch stands included. They also make a separate operating switch stand that can be hooked up to any turnout motor which Mark referenced above.

NJ International also offers operating switch machines:

I believe that Details West's switch stands can be made to operate but I could be wrong:

Caboose Industries makes manual throw operating switch stands. I'm not sure if they can be operated by a turnout motor:

Yes, it depends whether you are referring to a manually thrown switch stand (your fingers, basically), or a remotely/electric thrown switch.

I installed a few Caboose industries manually thrown switch stands. There is the large no-so-good looking model, and there is the more realistically looking model. I have the former because I don't like dealing with fragile things when I operate my layout. If you want realism, then go for the realistic ones.

I use them for switches that are easily accessible - those hard to reach ones have been automated using the Peco electrical system (that works great). I could install switchstands that connect with the Peco system, but have not tried that yet (my layout is still in construction).

In addition to the ones mentioned so far above, there are a number of different varieties up on Shapeways etc. for 3D printed kits.

Any of the moveable stands are basically a molded or printed base, a piece of stiff wire for the vertical part and a molded/etched/cut/etc target to glue to the wire. By attaching a small crank (glued printed/molded piece or soldered bit of sheet brass) to the bottom of the vertical wire (with the target glued/soldered to it), and attaching the crank to the turnout throwbar with another (bent) piece of wire, you can have the target rotate 90 deg when the switch is thrown - however you throw the switch.

Here are instructions on how to make the Details West switch stands moveable. I've made these and they work pretty well but I found it time consuming.

Here is a link to Rix operating stands. I installed these too. Much easier but in my opinion do not look as good.

I would be interested in other opinions of those who have actually installed operating switch stands.
