DCC, Or Analog?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 13, 2005 6:02 PM
I would like to know whether to use DCC or analog control for my new layout. I do not have extreemly high funds for this hobby, but i do want my layout to turn out good. Also, should i use a foam base over my table top?

well are you going to be switching [rolling stock] at the same time you are running trains on your mainline run? if so, choose DCC, if not, choose DC (analog).

Welcome to the forum![:D]
You don't give a lot of details about the layout but, as a general rule, if you are going to run more than one loco one the same track, go with DCC. If not DC/analog will suffice. [:)]
One other thing to think about. If you intend to run sound equipped locomotives, go with DCC. I know some sound equipped locos will run on DC systems, but to get the full potential out of the equipment and decoders you are paying for, you really need DCC.[:)]
My two-cents worth.[:p]

Remember its your railroad

there are some dcc units that are basically entry type equipment(few functions) at lower prices than the larger do more equipment (many functions) at higher prices. if you are purchasing new locomotives they can be bought dcc ready or with decoders installed. layout wiring is simpler but having to wire in the decoders might offset that simplicity. i am building a new nscale layout and i'm wiring it for easy conversion to dcc when i am ready which will be very soon. i'm going with digitrax wireless . the size of your layout does not matter. my club is going to switch to dcc for our large layout and one member has a small n scale layout (2x4) which is dcc equiped. i would recomend wiring for dcc but use straight dc until you can afford a better dcc unit.

Gotta go DCC. If you have run a layout with DC and one with DCC, you will never go back. There is no comparison in the way the two systems operate, DCC is easier once you've learned how to use it, but you do have to spend some time running to really get good at it.
A Digitrax Zephyr should fit your needs nicely, and isn't too terribly expensive. You could always buy the system instead of that one extra locomotive, and buy the latter next year.

waka324,

Regardless of which way you choose now, wire the layout with a wire pair (bus) so that you can go either way (if you change your mind in the future). Do not use common-rail wiring. It will preclude your using DCC in the future (unless you jump through a lot of electrical hoops). The Digitrax Zephyr is an inexpensive DCC system that has lots of growth capability. If you have never run a train with DCC, find a layout or hobby shop where you can experience it before making your final decision. You won't be disappointed.

I guess i will try DC, but make sure i can Switch to DCC at a single notice.

Thanks for all your input.

I have had DCC (Digitrax) for 2 plus years on my layout and I don't regret a moment ever having it. The way I can operate several trains at once, have friends over to each run a train, is the kind of enjoyment that this hooby should be. Don't be afraid of the cost because the fun is worth a lot more.
