I believe that one of the articles you are looking for is the "San Juan Central" project by Malcolm Furlow but it was a long time ago, possibly late 1980's? I don't have access to all my back issues. He essentially made it into a HOn3 Gallows turntable as I recall overlaying the 9" HO deck.
I had one of the old versions, wishing that Atlas made it a 12" or so version as I found it suitable for diesels but not for my 2-8-0 at the time!
Cheers from Australia

wjstixIn my experience, the Atlas TT is noisy if you use it powered with 12V. If you use only 3-4 volts, it's very quiet.
I wish I had thought of trying that! I thought I could live with the noise but the racket it made caused the hair on my neck to stand up. I couldn't tolerate it.
Lowering the input voltage is something to keep in mind for future motorized projects.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Found it. Or at least found ONE of the articles on this conversion of the Atlas turntable
February 2002 issue of MR, "build an inexpensive turntable" by Bob Foltz, page 94. But again I think this was one of a few articles on that same general idea, in addition to the tutorial on this Forum that someone found
