N scale slug
Posted by Aton on Friday, September 4, 2020 5:08 PM

Does anyone know where to find an N-scale S-1 slug? I'm trying to collect all of the B&O museum exhibits in n scale, which means I need to figure out how to get western maryland #138T, a slug based on an Alco S-1.
I know they're not commonly made, but I figure that there might be a shapeways kit or brass model or something?  I have both a laser cutter and 3D printer if there's cad designs for it that I could make (but i looked and didn't find any).

does anyone know a place To get one? Or if not, does anyone know were I can find the schematics so I can badly attempt to make it myself.

Here is a page full of pictures of 138T to use for starting reference.

Buy an S1 off eBay (I saw a couple cheap a day or two ago) and cut down the hood -- demotor it if you have to.  Even a relatively crude job may 'pass' well enough, and this is valuable practice in a number of skills.

Comparing photos of #138t to a standard s-1, it seems that just cutting it down might not work. You would have to also have to file down the siding to make it flat since almost all of the S units have either vents or acces panels on the sides, while the slug is distinctively smooth.
Just sawing off everything from the walkway up on an s-1, and then building It up from there, might work best. It would allow you to get very accurate detail from the walkway/railings down (where most of the detail on the slug is anyway) and a semi accurate hood. Plus, since the hood is pretty much just a smooth box with some curves and angles, it shouldn't be that hard to replicate.

I did not know there was an Alco S-1 slug.

I went to the Wikipedia page for the Alco S-1/S-3, and <CONTROL>(F) searched for "slug", but nothing came up.

Were these shop built by the railroads, or were the manufactured by Alco?
