I recently was given an old locomotive. It appears to be an ALCO F2, a PRR model no 5772. On the bottom of the locomotive the only information it has is "ROCO made in Austria." It runs well but I'm sure it could use some lubrication. I've been unable to find anything about this locomotive on the internet. Does anyone know anything about it, including how to remove the shell? Thanks in advance for your help!
It's probably an ALCO FA-2 made by Roco and sold by Model Power. The shell should only be snapped on, and spreading the sides will allow it to lift off the chassis. Despite them being too modern for my late '30s layout, I have a bunch of them...
...and despite weighing only a pound each, they're great pullers.
I converted another two of them into an MLW FPA-4/FPB-4 duo, and added a lot of weight to both of them...
A good friend bought the pair, but I wish I had them back, even though they're too modern for my layout.
Of course there's been lots of talk about incorrect nose contours and such, just like for early F-unit models, but the real ones and the two models are my favourite cab-type units.
