October Timonium train show cancelled.
Posted by riogrande5761 on Thursday, August 13, 2020 11:44 AM

Just received this email a few minutes ago - was hoping to go but understand the circumstances:

GREAT SCALE MODEL TRAIN SHOW OCTOBER TIMONIUM SHOW CANCELED

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

This message is being sent to all names on our email list of attendees. If you are also an exhibitor at our train shows, this may be the second time you receive this notice.

We are canceling the October 3 & 4 show owing to circumstances which force us to do so. Among the primary drivers of this decision are the following:

· Although Maryland has effectively controlled spread of COVID, many of our attendees and exhibitors reside in areas where the scourge has been less effectively controlled, or otherwise been subject to new outbreaks in recent days. As a “magnet,” our show would concentrate too many potentially exposed people in one place at one time.

· Quarantine requirements are required by some States and areas for those who return from trips beyond their home. Even assuming the most ideal conditions at our show, some who travel to it would be required to isolate themselves upon returning home.

· The collective sentiment of attendees and vendors alike indicates a high index of caution about coming to our show, or even any visits of any kind beyond their immediate surroundings.

· Many of our constituents are seniors, including those with underlying health conditions which make them especially vulnerable.

· Even with controls which exceed the CDC and local guidelines, the potential huge consequences of exposure vastly outweigh the imagined low chances of infection. Moreover, effective monitoring of compliance and policing of violations is a nearly impossible task given the size of our show.

· Finally, our polls tells us a very low (and decreasing) number of dealers and attendees would come to the show. At a time when preserving our assets and income is most important, running a money-losing operation is as irresponsible as exposing ourselves to a potentially lethal health challenge.

The February 6 & 7 show is still scheduled, for now.

We regret the cancelation and our positive that everyone understands the reasons for it.

We appreciate your patience.

Sincerely,

Scott and Mike

Bring an extra pair of shorts...

If I am going to be driving on snow I will need my brown shorts.

The previous weekend is the train show in Springfield, January 30 and 31... How crazy do I want to make this trip?

You need to move to Alaska, and you will be like me go 80 mph on ice without worrying about it.

Well, I guess I won't go to a train show....

Actually, we are going to a big wedding in Virginia that weekend.  I have to buy a suit.  I can't remember the last time I wore or even owned a suit.

This was a wise decision. I applaud Scott Geare for this action as it was the correct thing to do. When Ken and myself owned the show, we would have done the same, but only after careful study and research as I'm sure Scott must have done. We would have considered one way aisles with 12' witdths, no food service, and masks for all in addition to distancing.....but still saftey for all wins out in the end. I greatly look forward to the February show as I'll be there.

While the cancellation is a disappointment for many, I'd say it to be a wise decision, given current circmstances.
I expect that our usual November train shows and layout tours here in southern Ontario will also be cancelled, too, but again, I do believe that it's the best course to take.

I can't remember the last time I wore or even owned a suit.

When I retired I had about a dozen suits. Four of them were very nice.

Now I have one suit, pretty well made one, and basic black.

Only for when people kick or get hitched.

I will never where a suit for work again.

And throw a couple cats in your trunk.  They are handy to throw under the car wheels if the wheels spin when you're stuck.

You don't worry until you see a pile of cars up ahead and need a mile to stop but you don't got a mile, you got a lot less.  I've watched a few of those video's on Youtube with people flying into a pile of stopped cars on icey roads.  It's a demolition derby.

The suites I had didn't fit me anymore and I needed one for my fathers funeral in Iowa.  My wife found a guy in Roanoke VA who opened up his shop, fitted me, hemed the pants and sent me on my way.

Makes sense.  Those who wear suites often have correspondingly higher salaries. and may be able to retire early and be very comfortable.  My first wife wrecked me financially in the divorce so I'll be working until I'm old and then be poor.

While I made pretty decent money when I started as a steelworker (it got much better as the years went on), one of my first purchases was a custom-made suit, and I'd have to say, there wasn't a better dressed steelworker in town, a town of multiple steel mills and steel processors, and that included the management, too.

Let's just say that it attracted a lot of very, very, nice attention. WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

Thanks for that tip, maxman - I knew that they had to be good for something.

Wayne: we have not YET cancelled our Whitby show.  Our exective is working with the school administration and health authorities as to if and how we can do it. In november.

If it happens everyone will be required to wear a mask covering nose, mouth and chin at all times.

Our president is a retired Paramedic so we are being well advised.

One of these days I will get to Springfield. If only there was an easy way to get from the train station to the show venue - though these days with Uber and Lyft it might be more doable. The problem is the Springfield show is always on my older son's birthday.

I'm wondering if the Amherst show (West Springfield) is going to happen in January. That may be "too early" yet -- by then a vaccine ought to be just introduced, but not yet widespread.

I wouldn't be surprised to see cancellations continuing right into late summer 2021. If not longer...

I'm a vendor at Amherst and I get monthly updates from them. As of last week, the show is still going on. I know how crowded it can get, and we may go with a skeleton crew, and I will know more as we get close. The HUB division cancelled their December show in Marlborough, MA, which takes place that first weekend.

Stay safe everyone!

Never wore a suit (unless you count when I was under 5). Never owned any dress shoes or suit as an adult, no ties till recently but I got a zip up type from relative and liked it so much I bought a bunch to wear with dress shirts and blue jeans (or black jeans for special occasions).

It's probably safer this way.  A sign of the times. Sad.
