I'm looking for a good quality water tank kit for my HO scale NYC transition era layout. Any suggestions?

Kit number 154 is a nice craftsman style watertank

Believe it or not, the Atlas water tank kit is a pretty nice kit when properly painted and detailed.

Jetrock,
I just finished doing the same with the Atlas tank. Amazing how weathering makes it look like an expensive kit. Did the same with the Model Power coaling station.
Can't beat the price.

Agree with Jetrock--I have an Atlas water tank that I built about ten years ago, put it on the new layout along with my two Walther's ready-mades. Guess which tank gets the most comments? The Atlas is a handsome little kit--goes together easily and it has real chain for the lifts, instead of string. Nice kit.

wilist,

I put together the Walthers wood water tank. It's a very handsome kit! Unlike the Atlas, the counterweights come with string. I substituted 40 lpi chain to make it look nicer. If price is an issue, go with the Atlas.

Whichever tank you choose, my biggest suggestion and first hand tip would be to paint ALL the post and beam tank supports BEFORE gluing them together. It will save you a mess of time. And, paint the bottom and top portions BEFORE gluing them together. I literally spent about 12 hours meticulously painting mine because I didn't do the above mentioned. (They don't even suggest it in the directions.)

I've also built the Walther's Cornerstone wood tank kit. It's a good kit and builds up very nicely. Prepainting the subassemblies is definitely a good idea. It's a lot easier than painitng after assembly and improves the appearance considerably.
Have Fun,

I seem to recall the Atlas water tank is a PRR prototype. I agree it is a nice looking kit. It has been in their catalog for years and years.

I picked up one of the new Walthers wood water tank kits, and it's my new favorite (I just sold off my Atlas tanks, in fact!). At $30 apiece, you get something as detailed as anything else out there, for less work than one of the wood kits. It fits right in with my 1945-1950 NKP layout, and I'm looking to pick up a couple more!
