The new ones have sound now .What sound did they produce?
Just a sound of a blower for combustion air, much like an oil furnace would make with an occasional hiss of steam if the relief valve popped off.
Still, better than the small of smoke fluid burning.
Cheers, Ed
From the press release that was sent to me, they apparently make a lot of noise, although I could be wrong - they're too modern for my layout, so I mostly skimmed through the blurb.
Here's a LINK to one of the ads.

Rambo2Do they still burn the oil for the steam? And added sound?
I don't think the new ones "steam" at all, just now have sound.
I might be interested if they made one without sound or "steam", I run DC.....
Sheldon
The sound or steam both operate on dc too
Rambo2 The sound or steam both operate on dc too
But I don't want sound or steam.
And, the sound will not work on my DC layout, the throttles I use will not work with dual mode DCC decoders.
I do not run any sound locos, I cannot run locos with dual mode DCC decoders. My throttles are Aristo Train Engineer wireless radio throttles and they use pulse width modulation speed control which makes DCC decoders go crazy.
"steam" or "smoke", not on my layout, don't want the oily mess or the fumes in the air.
Lights, I can rewire them, but why would this car need lights? Its normal job is to be in the train between the locos and the passenger cars.
ATLANTIC CENTRALbut why would this car need lights?
Hi Sheldon,
I suspect that they were used as back up lights. Canadian Pacific put back up lights on a lot of their B units so logic would suggest that they did the same for the steam generators. I don't know about other railroads.
Dave
Edit:
I just sent an enquiry to Rapido to ask if the new generation steam generator cars have both steam and sound. Their ads seem to be ambiguous.
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Jason's Newsletter says Rapido replaced the smoke with the sound:
Check out this video of a typical Steam Genny in action by Ric Berryere. Listen closely - the steam generator is louder than the F40PH-2D coupled to it. That was normal when you were close up to these babies. And that's why we've replaced the steam feature in our model with steam SOUND!
[bold added by me]
Read about it here:

I would interpret this as the smoke generator has been removed and replaced with a sound unit.
I could be wrong.

Hi Ed,
I think I would rather have one with the 'steam', however wimpy, just for the novelty. Interestingly, I'm not interested in steam locomotives with smoke, at least not in HO.

I've read that for some long trains, multiple steam generator cars were used, sometimes with one of them on the back end of the train - possibly one reason for the lights.
ATLANTIC CENTRAL Rambo2 The sound or steam both operate on dc too But I don't want sound or steam.
Couldn't agree more.
I got a response from Rapido. The new steam generator cars are sound only. No wispy cigarette smoke.
