On enclosed water towers there is a door/hatch in the side separate from the people door, is this to fill the coal bunker?

Thanks, Ed, I knew I could rely on you. I think I am going to model the door open and show the coal bunker inside as it will allow me to use up some of the copious quantities of coal I have on hand.
I would have guessed that oil was used more frequently in your neck of the woods.

Actually, wood was the fuel most likely used and you can see many a 4-4-0 piled high with firewood out here on the West Coast, land of the monster trees. That being said the firewood probably got tossed through the door in much the same way.

Dave, that is just a photo I pulled off Google to ask the question. I am delighted with mine so far except for the roof. They give you the tar paper fixins, however, cedar shakes were the roof of choice in every pic I have seen of towers out West. I have found a place that sells .5mm cedar veneer and am going to start nailing down shakes in the near future.

Scaling the process down to HO might be a bit fussy, but quite doable IMHO.
