Link posting help.
Posted by mbinsewi on Sunday, March 1, 2020 1:50 PM

Yea, I know how to post a link, but, my question is, you guys that post a link and say something like, "look here", and the word "here" is highlighted, and is the link...how do you do that?  Surprise

Thanks!

Mike.

Highlight the “Here” and click on link, paste the URL in the window.

What the magic tool does, though, is the same thing that BBcode 'URL tags' do.  (You can look this up online to see better explanations if needed ... as well as many other useful bits of magic that BBcode tags can do.)

Now, the problem in explaining this in a post is that there's no way, other than taking a screenshot of the text and pasting it in as an image, that I can actually list what you have to type in ... because the posting 'engine' will automatically interpret the typed codes as instructions.

Control 'tags' in BBcode are set off by square brackets (on a PC the unshifted characters to the right of the P key).  In what follows I will use the shifted 'curly' brackets to stand in for the unshifted characters: when you actually use the tags, type accordingly...

To get the highlighted text in place of the URL, first you open an URL tag inline with the post by typing {url= and then immediately pasting in the URL you're referencing, then close the tag with } to make it active.  Whatever you type after this tag will be rendered in red as the 'clickable' link to the URL.

When you have entered what you want ... including any trailing spaces that are to be part of the red stuff ... you type the off tag, {/url} which defines the end of the clickable text.  Remember what I said about typing [] rather than {} when following these instructions...

Note that there are no implicit spaces in these tags, so you don't leave extra space in the sentence when typing them.  You may have to go in and edit a post a couple of times to get the hang of how the tags affect formatting; sometimes they wrap following text to the next line without warning.

In some cases, URLs that are 'blocked' from being clickable under Kalmbach defaults (like links to other Forum post threads) can be made live by manually entering them this way ... in other cases, not.

The chief value here is when you have a long. ugly, complicated URL to some photo or social site that you want to streamline without recourse to a service like tinyurl.  Note that the text itself can be a shorter or 'default' URL in type.

Let's say that you want to link to the definition of the word Here.

After you type Here, drag your cursor over the word Here, left click on the Insert/Edit Link icon, paste in the desired link, click OK, and you are good to go.

OK, I'll try this, a kitbash project using a AHM Flexi Flow covered hopper, and Plano etched metal parts, is here.

Mike.

PS.  YES!  Thank you all! Rich's instructions seem to sink in the best.

Another short thread!

I right-click on the item to which I wish to link, then, in the drop-down box which appears, left click on the option "copy link location".

Next, I type .

Next, I type the word or phrase which will appear as the actual link - it can be a single word, or 35 pages of gibberish, then follow that with

Here's a non-working (due to the incorrect brackets) example:

{url=https://www.bigbluetrains.com/showthread.php?tid=9087}Layout alterations{/url}

...and the same one done properly...

even though it will be of little interest to most people

Thank you Dr., I figured you'd have a way of doing this, as you do it ALL THE TIME!  Laugh  Joking.....Smile, Wink & Grin

A way to add a little interest to the link.

My method would have been easier to understand, had the software not edited out some key parts.

The method should have read:

First, I right-click on the item to which I wish to link, then, in the drop-down box which appears, left click on the option "copy link location".

Next, I type {url= (but with a square bracket), then "paste" the copied data, followed immediately with } (again, the square bracket version).

Next, I type the word or phrase which will appear as the actual link - it can be a single word, or 35 pages of gibberish, then follow that with {/url} (again, the squared-off version)

Here's a non-working (due to the incorrect brackets) example:

{url=https://www.bigbluetrains.com/showthread.php?tid=9087}Layout alterations{/url}

...and the same one done properly...

even though it will be of little interest to most people

This is the only method that I'm able to remember - I usually miss something when I've tried the other ones mentioned.
In addition to that, I waited over 5 minutes after hitting "Post Reply", and when nothing happened, copied my reply, then deleted it, planning to come back later and attempt to re-post what I had written originally.

I'll be glad (I hope) when this site gets updated, as it's sometimes becoming difficult to enter (often not responding) and, as with this one, sometimes fickle to use.
