Quick test of photo posting
Posted by FowlmereRR on Friday, February 28, 2020 3:35 AM

In preparation for starting a thread on my layout build, just testing that the FTP server I have set up here will make pics accessible.

Here should be a pic that I took at a steam fest in Saint Valery sur Somme, France, in 2016.

Hi, Bob

I don't see anything Sad I get a 404 if I click the link.

Here is a link to the Trains.com forum testing site where you can experiment without disrupting regular programming:

Thanks. I think maybe the DNS for that site hasn't propagated yet, so I'll leave it a while and try again. It all works locally.

Having tested elsewhere, I think this will work :

Yippee! So, what I have learnt from that (I think) is that you must use http:// to reference a remote image file; I specified ftp:// as that's what I had used here on my FTP server, and it didn't seem to like it.

Can somebody confirm whether I have got that right?

Just for fun, here's another pic from Saint Valery :

Hi FowlmereRR,

Unfortunately I'm not getting any images. Might I suggest that you follow the routine methods for posting pictures to the forums. That means that you will have to put your photos onto a photo hosting website like Imgur (free) or Photobucket and then link your photos to the MR website. It is a bit of a nuisance to go through all the steps, but that's the way the forums work.

If you want a more detailed explanation for how to do the above, ask and ye shall receive!

FTP = File Transfer Protocol

FTP addresses are used to upload files to web hosts using an ftp client/application.

You want the HTTP addresses for sharing files/images/photos that you have uploaded (via FTP) to the web host.  After you have uploaded the files/images to your web host you need to resolve the upload host location into a valid http address which you will use to post them here on cs.trains.com.

As a simple test, once the file/image is uploaded and you have the http address of the file you should be able to copy the image's URL/address into a new web browser window and the browser should display the image.

I tried guessing the http address (http://www.schematech.co.uk/FowlmereRR/dsc_1470.jpg) for the first image you uploaded but it is not working.  However even the base website www.schematech.co.uk address is not working either.

I normally host my images on my personal website (www.onewolf.org) and then link to them from here, however sometimes I use flickr.com to host photos/images and link to them on flickr.

Nothing here, says site can't be reached.  Do what Dave says an read the "sticky" on posting pictures.

Check your server settings. Since you can see your photos on this forum, is your server allowing access by third parties such as forum members?

Rich

Edit Note: The OP has now changed his settings and make the link accessible to 3rd party viewers. In fact, the photo now appears on this forum without the need to click on the link.

OK guys, this is what I have done.

I have a publicly accessible file server here on my network, on which the pics are hosted. This was initially set up with just FTP access, but I have now added HTTP access too.

I had already set up a DNS entry on my domain hosting account, which points ftp.schematech.co.uk to a spare public IP address on my ISP connection. (There is no www.schematech.co.uk entry as I don't run a web server here).

In my firewall I have added access rules and NAT rules to translate both HTTP and FTP access on the public IP address to the local IP adress of the server.

I have enabled READ ONLY access on both protocols to the share containing the pics.

I have tested this whole config locally both on the internal network, AND through the URL, and I get the expected results.

BUT, I did find in all this that something (possibly my file server) is case sensitive, so dsc_1469.jpg doesn't work, but DSC_1469.JPG does.

So, from a browser, you should be able to get an image back by using http://ftp.schematech.co.uk/FowlmereRR/DSC_1469.JPG

If that still says unreachable, then it may be that the DNS entry, which I only set up a couple of hours ago, hasn't yet propagated around the net far enough.

I can see my own images here on that URL.

Nope.  What I get:

This site can’t be reached

ftp.schematech.co.uk took too long to respond.

Try:

ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

may have just fixed this - I found one rule in my firewall that I hadn't updated from FTP only to FTP & HTTP.

 One more for luck

You image URL is now accessible and working: http://ftp.schematech.co.uk/FowlmereRR/DSC_1469.JPG

Yes the www is case sensitive. :)

I don't know what is going on.  The OP's link in his first post, if I click copy link, it is a cs.trains.com/mrr/yadda yadda address.

His next three attempts are visible to me and the ftp address works for me
