Athearn/Walthers well car ladder replacements
Posted by elansp on Monday, February 10, 2020 9:04 AM

Hello All-

Due to somme rough handling, I noticed that several of my wellcars designed by both Athearn and Walthers need their ladders replaced.  Can anyone advise where I can find these replacement parts?

Thanks in advance,

They are always all over Ebay.  Once in HO Scale, search well cars, and well car parts, scroll away, you'll find them from many different sellers.

You might have to try different search wording.

I didn't see any on Athearn's site.

I did a quick search to get a look at the cars, and I didn't see any ladders, only drop-steps and handrails.

The cars are too modern for my late '30s-era layout, but if they were mine, I'd use phosphor-bronze wire (available from Tichy in several diameters) to fabricate replacement parts which would stand-up better to handling.
For HO, .125" wire is good for grabirons, while the handrails might be better with .015" wire.
I'm not aware of a source for flat bar in phopsphor-bronze, but Detail Associates has it in brass, (.010"x.030") and it would be appropriate for creating sill steps.
I use it for such on all of my passenger and express cars...
