Sticky question: about the best glue to use on a loco
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, January 8, 2005 10:55 AM
I'm the proud owner of a Bachmann 4-8-4 Niagara. The darn thing came with the smoke deflectors detached and no advice on how to glue them on or which glue to use. It's plastic, and I'm wondering if it's best to use a "super glue" type or a traditional polystyrene model kit glue. Any suggestions?

I found that super glue will work, but it does'nt have very much shear strength. When ever possible, carefully apply 5minute epoxy.I've had good results with it so far.

If the area you are bonding is not painted, any solvent based glue or cement will work great. A very small drop of acetone (finger nail polish remover) will do wonders. Just be careful not to get the solvent on any painted visble areas.

I found small tubes of super glue for plastic at our super market. After try it on some Athearm passenger cars to glue the windows in and the brake wheels, I'm sold on it. Like was mentioned above it doesn't have much shear strength, but it doesn't take a lot of strength for some things and in case of "mishaps" the glue will pop lose before the parts break. Just a personal preference is all. Ken
