Modeling SW1200s with Athearn BB
Posted by FRRYKid on Sunday, January 26, 2020 1:19 AM

I know that Life-Like made an SW9/1200 as part of their Proto 2000 series as I have one I repainted. However, did Athearn ever make one or would that have been something that someone created from a 1000? As usual, thank you for any assistance that can be provided.

Hi FRRYKid,

I can't answer your question but I'm curious to know why you are asking. Do you prefer Athearns to the Proto 2000 models. I have several of the P2Ks and they perform very nicely. I know they had a problem with wonky handrails and delicate details but otherwise they seem to run fine.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Athearn made the SW7,SW1000 and the SW1500..The SW1000 looks nothing like the SW7.. The SW1000 looks more like the SW1500 with a single stack.

Opportunity to purchase a engine shell. I was trying to find the right drive for it.

I used Athearn's SW (originally labelled as an SW1500) to create my own version of the SW1200RS, which I believe was a product of GMD.
Basically the prototype was an SW1200 equipped with Flexicoil trucks and walkway handrails, plus light and numberboard packages as dictated by the buyer - in Canada, that would be the CPR and CNR.

In the photo below, the 1364 is an SW1200RS (the RS representing "Road Switcher"), while the 7104 is known as a "Sweep", a combination of a geep with an SW1200RS....

My version got Athearn's Flexicoil trucks and new Mashima can motors, plus some additional weight, along with walkway handrails, but I skipped the majority of the custom lighting packages offered at the time, as I didn't think them to be all that well-done.  Here are a couple of them (I built four, but have only one left)...

...and Athearn's SW converted to an NW...

Here's an old link to a thread that talks about Athearn switchers.  Comments and links from Jeffery W., along with Dr. Wayne and Larry (Brakie).

Gives some good info.

PS.  Cool. Dr. Wayne posted while I typed.

Dr. Wayne,

Sounds a lot like what I did with a 1000. I took a stock Athearn unit and put a set of Smokey Valley fexicoils on it.  (Leftover from a project that I abandoned.)

From I can tell I think I will get said shell. Thank you for all the assistance.
