Weekend Photo Fun - 10/25 to 10/27/19

Good morning from cloudy and cool Northeast Ohio!

This is the Thread where modelers can show work in progress, finished projects, and old or new layout pictures

First up is an IMRC 40' PS1 Boxcar Kit, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and Black paints, then lettered with Speedwitch Media Decals.  The Lehigh Valley got the first order of PS1's made by Pullman Standard and these were used in general service. These were sold to Evans Products in the late 60's and leased back and were painted in PC Green. A lot of the bankrupt railroads in the 60's and 70's did this.

Next is an Athearn ACF 4600CF Covered Hopper kit, painted with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray Paint and lettered with Oddballs decals. The ACF 4600 CF Car was used by a lot of railroads as it was a Plate B car and could make it into sidings that the ACF 4650 car could not.

This is the first Tangent G43 Gon that I am assembling, this one will be in PRR and the others will be in PC, most will be fitted with coil cradles for transporting coiled steel.

Rick .... Thanks for starting Photo Fun . Your freight cars look great again thins week. It is good of you to provide some brief information about the prototypes. 

Below is my FT ABBA. I put together these units from Stewart undecorated models. I detailed and painted them to look as the prototypes appeared when new in 1944.

Thanks for kicking-off the WPF Rick. Those cars look great!  Garry, your scene is very inspirational. I am years away from such a nice finished layout like yours.

This week, I officially entered the HOn3 world. I connected an HOn3 loop on my layout. For now, my roster includes two 2-8-0s, an MDC and a brass. The MDC was a clunker I bought a few years ago. I managed to fix it and convert it to DCC. Runs like a champ now. Have a great weekend... Simon

This week I installed a light switch to control the power to a staging track. It works great, so I’ll be getting more the the other tracks.

The track in Plattsburgh yard was also looking a little kinked, So I took a dremel to the turnouts (eek!) and now it is nice and smooth.

The next major project is to straighten out this mess…

The northbound WR-15 crosses Margaret St. in Plattsburgh. The station wagon is a Matchbox car I found at Renny’s in Wells, ME.

The rear finally clears…

This corner is an area I started scenery on, but never finished. Looks like someone illegally dumped a car there.

The Adirondack passes the WR-15 doing some switching at the transload building. The grass will become a parking lot.

Rick: Your usual great work and info! Thanks for getting things started.

Garry: Nice job on the FTs. The "Q" always had classy looking loco's.

Simon: Congrat's on your foray into HOn3. All those engines look good,but that brass is a beaut!

I had #487 off the layout for some light weathering and lubrication - being as it was already apart,now was a good time to upgrade to a Tsunami 2 decoder. I left the separate four function decoder in the boiler that handles the head light,class lights,# boards,and cab lights, as is.

It's back on the roster now,and runs great,but still needs a bunch of CV's adjusted,and some functions remapped.

Meanwhile,473 crosses the aptly named Little Dry Creek:

Thanks Mike. Great weathering job on that 473... I don't have sound yet on my MDC, but I will get there at some point. My brass still needs to be re-motored and DCC'd. I'm waiting for the parts to arrive to tackle it. It runs great on DC, so I am looking forward to it.

Rick: Great job on the LEHIGH VALLEY boxcar. I have had excellent results also with Speedwich Media decals. Lots of mt freelanced cars have data and numbers from their various sets.

Garry: Great photo of the FTs in action. I have F3s and F7s, but no FTs on my roster.

Simon: Have fun with the HOn3 models. They look great.

Harrison: That is a lot of impressive work you have completed. The new track arrangement looks like it operates smoothly.

Mike: That is a great looking locomotive. Good job on the decoder installation.

Larry: Thank you for sharing the picture of your GP-38-2 collection. When I modelled 1968 in N scale, the STRATTON AND GILLETTE had more GP-35s than any other locomotive. It was my favorite. Very similar to the GP38-2, but had one more little fan in the middle.

I completed this SPOKANE AND CASCADE boxcar this week. This model was built from an Intermountain kit. It is pretty much a stock build straight from the box.

It was weathered using the new watercolor weathering pencils from AK modeling. There are some great videos for how to use these on the AK-interactive website. Military modelers and wargamers have been going nuts about them, so I thought I would give them a try... then I dropped $80.00 on the whole set! They better work good.

I went real light on the weathering because I was not sure how ir would react with the Dullcoat I use for a final coat. It was no problem at all. I got nice subtle rust streaks down the rivet lines, and a little streaking on the paint. I put light scratches and rust streaks near the door, but they are barely visible.

You get excellent control with these pencils, and since they are watercolors, if you make a mistake it easily washes off with no trace.

Larry- Nice GP38-2s, Seaboard is a railroad I don't often see modeled.

Kevin- Thats $$$ for watercolor pencils, I have some cheap ones, might give it a try soon. Hopefully the FG&W decals are next on your list. 

I spent a couple hours doing the dreaded wiring, but it looks sooo much better now. I'm almost temped to put up a facia now. I am also going around the layout fixing small track kinks and replacing sectional track with flextrack.

Rick,  Thanks for the WPF start-up.  Interesting history about boxcar leasing and your ACF 4600 inspired me to finally learn the meaning of Plate B.

Kevin,  Having family in the pacific northwest I extra like your nicely done boxcar.  Will be giving watercolor pencils a try.

Rick thanks for starting off WPF. Your cars are nicely done, as usual. The short history less in appreciated as well.

Garry - Love the FTs. An impressive consist.

Kevin - The water color pencils seem to work well. I'm not much for weathering, but I might give them a try.

Peter - Appropriate photo for the season.

I'm still working on my flour mill conversion. Shockers Electric is coming along. I've installed some interior lighting as is evident from the accompanying photos.

I just finished weathering my first car! Because I have to aquire all new locomotives and rolling stock. I also decided I wanted some 1950s trains, and I can swap them out with modern equipment. Duel era I guess.
