There are two vaccines available for shingles. The first one developed in 2006 is Zostavax. It is available to seniors in Ontario over age 65 for free under our health plan. It lasts for about five years.
The second option is Shingrix which was approved in 2017. It is considered to be more effective than Zostavax and is predicted to last longer. It requires two injections anywhere from 2 to 6 months apart.
Neither vaccine is 100% effective. In fact, the Zostavax is only about 50% effective. Both vaccines can be taken if you have already had shingles IIRC.
I know all this because I just had my first Shingrix shot last Wednesday.

Top of the page! Breakfast is on me. I recommend french toast made with banana bread and served with Canadian maple syrup and bacon. It tastes great, and is a good way to use up banana bread that is a bit stale, not that the Diner would serve anything that is stale.

So long as you keep your breath and body fresh, always act like a gentleman, and keep your hands where they belong you should do okay. You may not meet miss perfect, but you might have a lot of fun.

I think that is a great suggestion! I am a good dancer (was anyhow). When I was in university I would have no shortage of girls insisting that I dance with them at the pubs. Some nights I hardly got a break. I learned to jive pretty well, and the girls loved it when I taught them some of the basics, even though it was in the late 70s when jiving had almost become a lost art.
If you discover that you do like dancing, there are lots of dances happening all the time at local Legions and other halls. There are also dance clubs, although their standards can be a little on the high side.
I will say one more thing about dancing. I am a klutz when it comes to physical movement. I have to really focus on which foot to move next, and it took me a long time to get it (mostly) right. My point is that I was able to learn to dance well enough that I got complimented regularly. It's almost like learning to play a musical instrument but easier.
Just beware of the cougars!!

I had the Zostavax about five years ago, it was free. Then this past year my doctor said I should get the Shingrix. I got the first one two months ago, and the second the other day. My Part D for Medicare covered most of the cost for Shingrix.
I have never had side effects of medicines or vaccinations before, so I was a little surprised I got them this time. It only lasted a day, and I'm feeling a lot better today.
My father had shingles when he was in his 80s, and he really suffered. That's why I made sure to get vaccinated.

Saturday already! Time is flying by these days.
Yesterday, I tried to use my printer, but no luck! I haven´t used it for quite some time, and it appears to be frozen up. Well, time to take it to the dump - getting it repaired is more expensive than buying a new one.
Jimmy - maxman´s idea of taking dancing lessons is a wonderful suggestion! Girls just admire a good dancer, something I have never been. Those lessons will not only teach how to do all those fancy dance steps, but also help you on how to communicate with the other gender. I´d say go for it!
Steven - I am sure that crazy Sidney woman does not know what legal risk she is taking by running around and telling fabricated stories about you at your workplace! I am sure a time will come when just ignoring it won´t do any longer. I´d suggest to clearly tell her to stop that nonsense or she will face legal action for libel! You could also go for a court injunction. This is not a child´s horseplay, but a serious issue!

Morning all. I do believe I overreacted yesterday, but I was just fed up, you know? Anyway, Ill look into the Dancing classes. Funny how things go, last night a local woman actually started talking to me about model trains, and wanting to get into it. Apparently she saw me last year at my clubs open house and wants to get to know me better. Not going to rush this, but it is nice to find someone my age into model trains.
Pretty much this week, the train woman and my nascar driver -Ryan Blaney-winning Talladega have been the only two good things.

Ive got a female friend who is a bit younger than I am, with a daughter she's had shingles at least 5 times in the past decade. She breaks my heart with that.

The day started fairly nice, but by the time I had finished the HD list, the sky turned grey and now St. Peter is shedding tear drops - again. Took an old printer to the city dump for recycling. They have a container in which you cal load any electric/electronic device you wish to get rid of. These won´t be repaired, but taken apart to recycle any valuable material. It is incredible how much gold they get out of that effort each year.

My latest project is to scratchbuild an N Scale Starbucks. I needed something small to fit into an area next to the Union Pacific station. I like flat-roofed buildings -- no angles to drive me crazy.
Not much else going on here, so it will be an enjoyable day. Hope everyone is feeling well and having a good Saturday.

Well, NWP SWP, that is true! The world is full of loonies! One of my favorite stories about that is this one:

I guess I should consider myself lucky so far in my search for the "perfect Lady". The Lady I am dating at the moment is intelligent, caring, easy on the eyes, and a lot of fun to be around. Just wish both of us weren't so busy and could see each other more often..... She has just added being on a ladies Volleyball League to her weekly schedule for the winter. That is in addition to swimming (several miles a week), Pickleball, Golf, and walking several times a week. Of course the Volleyball will replace golf for the winter..... I am taking her to Eastman Theater (Kodak Hall) in a week and a half to a concert featuring Wynton Marsalis with the Jazz from Lincoln Center Orchestra. That should be fabulous, and it will be great to have a lovely lady that I like sitting next to me. Will be having dinner at her house before we head to Rochester that evening. At this point I have no idea what the future holds, but my youngest son reminded me that, "Slow and Steady wins the race!"
BTW, I am now running 4 miles a day 3 days a week over at the fieldhouse.... Never in my life would I have thought I could do that!
Frankly, I have been celibate for way too long after losing my wife to cancer. I don't think I could be a Monk! I'll settle for being a Deacon (Presbyterian). LOL At least "Hope springs eternal....." - Alexander Pope

Ken - Glad it was not a worse accident. I’ve had a couple of close calls, but so far have managed to avoid the idiot drivers around me.
Closest call (last one at least) was a F150 blew a yield sign with me entering the intersection, and I did not have a yeild sign. I quickly cut left into a empty turn only lane and missed him by mere inches. I also was blowing the cars horn as he had zero clue I was there. He then got his feelings hurt and stopped in the middle of the lane before signaling that I was number 1, before continuing on.

W*^k - Got stopped by the PSP (Pa State Police) in the w*^k car the other day. No, I was not driving above the speed limit, nor was I on my cell phone. I also did not commit any other moving violation. The delivery car has a defective (and apparently now retired number) license plate, where the paint for the letters/numbers has peeled away from the metal of the plate. Seems that my driving in the rain made it peel off the rest of the way, so that the plate number is no longer readable. (Until you get right up to it and can see the outline of the stamped in numbers.) As I was nearing the NY state line, the officer initiated a traffic stop.
When he learned it was not my personal vehicle, he ran it’s info and mine, then came back with a HUGE 10X17 piece of paper, that was the info he ran, as well as the stop information, and a form that the car owner needed to fill in and drop off at the station.
That complete, there will be a free replacement plate coming in the mail.
First time I have ever been pulled over, and it was all because of a defective license plate, on a vehicle that I don’t even own...
At least my record of no moving or parking violations is still intact! (Many people my age have had at least a parking ticket by now, if not a speeding ticket.) I always try to remain alert to those type of things, as I don’t want my train money turning into fine money...
Drum friend - I had mentioned in a prior post that I will sometimes fill in for a friend when we get together to play music. He had gone through throat cancer, caused by acid reflux of all things, and, while not cured, it was under control. Last couple of weeks he started getting excruciating headaches, and then developed stroke like symptoms. (Weakness on right side, face drooping, trouble speaking.)
They quickly ruled out a stroke, as the cat-scan showed a brain bleed. They did surgery on Wednesday to correct the bleed, and found it was caused by (and covering) a tumor, that is about 3/4” diameter. That turned out to be cancerous as well, so it seems that his throat cancer hopped the elevator up a couple of floors. He heads to UPMC Pittsburgh on Tuesday to discuss options, if any.
His right hand has gotten bad enough that he can no longer grip a drum stick, so, I maybe filling in a bit more often. I will need to get some more songs into my practice routine that he normally plays. (Although the group of friends, myself included, is way more concerned with his health currently. So most likely no jam sessions for a while.)
Trains - Got caught by the local a couple times this week, and was witness to a big near miss on one of them. They came within a couple of feet of pegging a pickup truck who was not paying attention to where he was. (Farmer checking on a field, and was more preoccupied with that then he should have been, as he crossed the tracks on the private access road, directly in front of the oncoming local!) Had the engineer not been paying close attention there, and immediately applied the brakes like he did, there would definitely have been a collision. I had noticed the farm truck, and then immediately noticed the air brake hiss on the local, right as the engineer sounded the horn in one long blast. He reacted in mere seconds of the truck coming into view, and because of that barely missed having a new coupler cover.
He did a great job of avoiding a bad situation with his very quick thinking and actions, and I gave him a great big thumbs up when he passed me.

Nothing..... it would probably be everything you said. The way my life was 26 years ago before my better half Judy came into the picture. Key words (better half)....., that's my Judy.
I spent the better part of last week flat on the couch. I suppose it's better I got the flu early this year. Now I don't have to worry about it for the rest of the 351 days of Winter
I got one more day of Summer and one more day of Fall the last 2 days. Yesterday it was 72° after it snowed, just days ago in crazy Minnesota.
Judy wanted to go to the apple orchard in White Bear Lake and I figured being out in that beautiful weather would be better than laying around on the couch sick one more day so I took her.
Fall is rather festive, it was kind of fun.
She liked this pumpkin with the big stock. It was the display but the manager gave it to me for twenty bucks. That made Judy happy, so it was worth it.
Corn mazes are not exactly my idea of a good time. You pay money to go get lost in the corn, I don't think so but somehow Judy talked me into it this time.
I'm telling you, that fresh maple-nut caramel corn was better than CrackerJack ever was.
We went to the Blacksmith Lounge in Hugo for broasted chicken, cuz it's always so good and it was only 8 miles away. Judy didn't play pull tabs this time but she played the meat raffle and won!
My favorite part of the day was railroad orientated of course. There was a railroad berm going across the lake just like I've seen in North Dakota driving across the plains.
It was a fun day.
Today it was 66° and sunny. I took my Mustang out for possibly it's final romp....., unless there'll be a little more Indian Summer Let's just keep our fingers crossed.

The Earnslaw is a beautiful ship! We have an old steamer named the Segwun that still plys the waters in the Muskoka lakes. It was built in 1887 but has undergone substantial renovations over the years. It is a bit shorter than the Earnslaw but still an impressive craft.

It´s Sunday - time for a big breakfast! I´ll go for a German breakfst this time, fresh baked rolls, butter, cheese, cold cuts, jams, honey, fruit, a soft boiled egg and lots of coffee, please!
I am a miserable sod today. I woke up in the wee hours with my left elbow hurting like hell - just out of the blue! I have no idea why! It´s boiled down to a nagging pain by now, but still highly discomforting. If it has not improved by tomorrow, I will have to see my doc about it.
Steven - in the good old days, when cars were mostly mechanical contraptions, you could give a flood car a good dry out and clean-up, replaced the elctric components, like starter motor, wiper motor, alternator, distributore and battery, and you were back on the road. With today´s cars, a a flood car is a total loss as all the electronics are gone. Better to stay away from that car.

Another fall morning -- cool, clear, and a hint of winter. I love this time of year.
Fall in New Orleans was wonderful because the weather finally cooled to bearable. However, you never really got the feel of autumn with the leaves changing, the smell of fireplaces, and the feel that you need to enjoy it because winter is coming.
Ricky W, I hope your friend gets some good news from the doctors. It sounds very serious.
TF, that looks like a neat place. We are headed to a pumpkin patch Friday with the grandkids. I'll drop a bundle of cash that day on pies, pumpkins, rides, etc.
Ken, you took your dog to Lowes. I have a friend who works for a Lowes in the Phoenix area. If I remember correctly, he told me someone there brought a pig with them to the store.
I'll be watching today as they knock the cranes down at the collapsed New Orleans hotel. With all the lawsuits already beginning, I would not want to be the insurance companies.
