I bought what claimed was a NIB off eBay. It appeared to be new and never ran. Went to test it and at full throttle was barely moving making a horrible noise. Tore it apart and broe the end off one of the hand rails, dont know how I am going to fix that. Anyway the oil had turned to a sticky grease been sitting so long, my guess about 13 years. Went to clean everything and the universals fell off the worm shafts and noticed a slit in both of them. Is there supposed to be a slit or are both of them cracked? I dont know first time taking one apart. My other Atlas locos have a hex universal.

Bumping your post, someone ought to know this. It looks like they might have slits on the parts diagram, but I'm not a N scale guy

I'm not at all familiar with N scale stuff, but here's a LINK to allow you to contact Atlas regarding replacement parts.
I recently needed some parts for an Atlas (formerly Branchline) HO scale passenger car, and I got not only a quick e-mail response, but also quick delivery of the parts I needed.
