Upgrading a Concor SD24
Posted by BEAUSABRE on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 2:06 PM

Couldn't resist when I found a Concor SD24 lettered for the PRR (I know, I know, it's just that, darn it, the Pennsy SHOULD have had some!) at a swap meet for $20.

So what and how to upgrade?

1) Replace motor with can motor

2) Add DCC / Lighting

3) Add weight

4) What to do about traction tires ?

5) Replace gearing with NWSL? What part nunber to order?

or should I buy a Walthers SD24B kit, strip out the drive train, then couple it to   an Atlas/Kato undecorated unit painted up for the PRR?

or try putting Concor body on Atlas/Kato frame?

Your thoughts will be most appreciated. Thank you.

That would be my first try.  I'd try with just an Atlas frame and drive train, as the Atlas/Kato drives (Atlas made in Japan) are more pricey and not as easy to find.

Sellers have caught on to the fact that Atlas locomotives (yellow box) made in Japan can demand a higher price.

I have some of each (Austria and Japan) and the Austria locos run great, and are an easy hardwire for DCC.

Your are talking HO scale I presume?

That Walthers kit was just a handrail conversion, right?

Your best bet would be to put it on a Life Like Proto 2000 SD7 / 9 frame.  This would be accurate for the SD24 shell, but it might take some modifications for the ConCor shell to fit.

Atlas / Kato never made a mechanism with the proper trucks.  Atlas / Roco and Atlas / China do (did).

Too late to order anything from NWSL. Hobby stores might have some stock.
