Last week was a little slow in Weekend Photo Fun. I sure am hoping for a lot more responses this week.

There was plenty of activity of people viewing last week, my photos had higher than normal views, but just not much posting.

.

To start us off this week I am presenting the first of my freight cars painted and lettered for the DAWDLE AND DELAY. Several months ago I bought a lot of "used" decals on ebay that had about 25 sets of decals for this ficticious railroad. As soon as they arrived, I decided this would be one of the two interchange lines on my layout.

The freight car is a Proto-2000 kit of a 50 foot automobile boxcar. It is painted with Scalecoat 2 Boxcar red #2 paint. Trucks, wheels, and couplers are Kadee, of course. A-Line stirrup sill steps were added for durability.

Grandkids will be visitng this coming week, and so I made a whimsical scene for my layout..... Cruella Deville is larger than HO scale, and I only had 15 dogs instead of 101 available to paint to look like Dalmations. Oh well. having fun anyhow.

Kevin your orginal post did not show up when I went to post so I started a new one, I hope the moderators can delete mine. Nice car by the way.

Gary, another nice scene from your layout, I also liked the one last week, I remember when you started that grain elevator last year.

 

I went back in time to get some cars to run in consists for the 1950's.

First is a 1937 AAR Boxcar kit from IMWX.  The only modification to the kit was the use of Yarmouth Model Works Sill Steps in place of the plastic sill steps of the kit. Painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Speedwitch Media Decals. Car was one of 3,500 built by the NP in the early 40's and used in general service along with hauling grain during the fall grain rush.

Next is a post war 1944 AAR Boxcar kit from Atlas (Ex-Branchline), used the 4-4 ends and Murphy Panel Roof to match the prototype along with A-Line Sill steps in place of the plastic ones.  Car was painted with a mixture of Scalecoat II Oxide and Boxcar Red paints then lettered with Speedwitch Media Decals. Again car was used in general service.

GARRY, I'd bet a 101 Dalmations probably retail for something like $79.95 nowadays. You did well with 15, I'd say.

Rick, The NP Monad has always been one of my favoriate all-time classic heralds IMO.

Well, I've been getting ready for vacation, then was up in Michigan, including the UP. Missed my one good chance at a train pic in Munising, as I was carrying stuff up to the motel room when a CN rebuilt Geep went by with 3 cars on its way to the Neenah paper mill, where we heard it swicthing later in the evening.

Did get some pics of the old ferry dock where the DSS&A's (Later the Soo line's) Chief Wawatam tied up when bringing cars across the Mackinac Strait. It was finally retired in 1984. Not much left but some pilings and concrete foundations here in St. Ignace, but worth a stop .

The lighthouse is very modelable, as it's only maybe 60' high so could fit well on almost any layout.

If you look closely, you can see the ghostly outlines of some pilings that have fallen away from the side of the pier in the next pic.

Before  I left, I started another Hot Wheels bash of a less than $2 tracked vehicle. It's wheels (hidden underneath) didn't roll well, but were close to HOn3. I should've taken a pic of the hack to HOn3 before I epoxied it back together (I drilled out the rivets to get it apart.) Basically, since the HOn3 wheels are slightly smaller in diameter, you need to move the location of the "journals" down a little with some plastic bits and cut the opening in the bottom larger to fit it all in with the wheels properply set in place to roll. When it was done, the new wheels helped it roll better than ever.

It's called a HailCat. Not sure if something real or not is involved, but a comparison pic of it together with one of my HyRail Mogs shows it's in the ball park and is at least somewhat believeable alongside HO scalle stuff.

I painted the details to improve its looks. There's more room for hacking some more details (maybe a cherry-picker like on the 'Mog?), just haven't had the time yet.

Ok, back to WPF

 

I have worked again on my N scale Fos wharf.

The last building of the set is now nearly finished, still missing is glazing, details and people and some wheatering job on the roof.

Again it's made of Evergreen styrene and Tichy windows.

To be convincing, the wharf need some ships along.

As mentionned before I have begun to work on some models I had on hand.

I particulary work on this one; this is a very old Linberg kit in 1/400 scale of a "Q" ship of the US Navy.

I acquired this kit on Ebay for a few bucks last month, because it's incomplete.

But only the hull interested me because it has the design of the 1930-1945 area which I model, the hull is about one feet long to be exact 32.5 cm.

I slightly modified the hull, but I scratchbuild in styrene new deck and new superstructures, using Tichy doors and Plastruct steps.

It has now the look of a steam ship of the period; I use the stock chimney too.

The hull was cut to be water level and glued on a piece of styrene; it shall have light inside by leds

The hull and superstructures are nearly complete, just need to scratch the brass mast and some details.

Interesting items, everyone!  

I was running low on Intermountain wheelsets, so when ordering somehow convinced myself to add a couple of items to better utilize the shipping cost.  Makes complete sense to me!  So I added the Chooch 40T girder load in the gondola, plus the red beer truck.  There seems to be lots of beer trucks on my layout.

Afterthought...I notice the UTP tank car also, one of two Blue Box tankers I assembled this week.  Had not done anything constructive lately so just shook the two boxes to get back to trains a bit.

Thanks for the wintery pics of the Chief Wawatam!

They sent a chill down my spine, a very good thing now that I'm back home in the sweaty summer of Central Illinois. I saw her from a distance just once at night during a brief trip in December 1975 to visit some old friends from Germany whose dad transferred to Kinchloe AFB.

The Q Ship build is neato, too.

Marc - I spent parts of several winters on a Coast Guard ice breaker freeing the Chief from the ice. Her fish-plate hull was a real drawback in the ice. Great pictures!! The building look good and the ship is unusual.

Paul - Nice cars and a good photo.

Peter - Good industrial scene.

Harrison - Good 1:1 photos.

I'm back to working on my new Black River Station project. I decided to make some adjustment to the trackage to accommodate the larger footprint of the new station.

The station platform, reduced to minimum, still interfered with passing trains on the mainline.

The same problem manifested itself on the back of the station on the RIP/watering track.

Removal of the RIP track switch and track.

Clean-up.

The station is roughly in place. The replacement track for the switch has been test fitted. Lots of landscaping and tweaking to go, but its a start.
